As others have said, if one cartridge is empty, it will not print. Yes, it is fast once it actually does start printing. However, it is often processing, processing, processing, processing, processing, processing, etc. It can be idle for while or just finish printing, and it will decide to process while you are waiting for it.
The envelope printing is handly, but a slot just for that would be handier so you dont have to pull out the paper and align the guides and then back again.
Pros: reliable, durable
Cons: Slow Print Speed
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good Output, Eventually...

This printer looked great on paper and the sample printouts looked good as well. However, once installed, I have been very unimpressed with it. The time from power on -- either from an off or sleeping state -- to printed output takes forever as the printer goes through some kind of a warm-up / priming / calibration process. Printing a single page can sometimes take minutes if the printer wasn't used recently. The printer has 5 ink cartridges that last a very short period of time and the printer won't print if one is empty (even if you are printing in black and white). I rarely print in color, yet feel like I am constantly replacing cartridges; I confess I wonder if these have some kind of internal expiration date. The bundled software for scanning is terrible.
Pros: High Quality Output
Cons: Slow Print Speed, poor software

I have enjoyed my Canon MX 860 for several years now. Tonight, I printed out seven glossy II photos of my recently departed Dad for my Mother. The colors are true to life, and the details are amazing. Canon printing does take the average computer buff to the next level in terms of quality prints. The only draw-back is that it takes several minutes start printing after a command is given on the PC; but it's well worth the wait for superior results.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, High Quality Output, easy to use, built like a tank.
Cons: Slow Print Speed, Large Footprint, uses a fair amount of ink.

Pretty Good Printer

This unit replaces a separate printer/scanner. Too early to give it 5 stars or honestly rate some of the Pro/Con areas because I have not used all features. Will know better in a month or two. Setup was a little confusing. Implied that you could not use both wireless and wired network simultaneously but after testing, it does. Printer is hooked directly to router. Desktop connected via wired LAN, initially, so was the laptop. After setup was complete I disconnected the wire to the laptop and bingo, printer showed up and I can print to it via wireless. Could use better instructions on setup, particularly when using rear tray for photo paper and lower tray for regular paper. That has caused me some consternation and frustration switching back and forth but am slowly figuring it out. Over all, would recommend it.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors

purchased MX860 in 3/09. Good printer overall, however I have gone through too much ink in this small time period. I am a homeowner, and my printing consists of recipes, etc. I am not into photo printing. During this week, i could not print out anything. Called Canon, and found out the print head needs to be replaced. Canon is replacing it and sending a new Black ink cartridge. I am satisfied with this repair, however it hasn't even been a year yet. I hope this is the end of it.
Pros: Compact Design, easy to use
Cons: High Ink Consumption, unreliable

Setup documentaton is not clear.
The printer is set up with a USB connection to to one computer. That computer is networked to several others via ethernet thru a router. All computers are running XP and the network has been functioning for several years without problems. The Canon i960 this printer replaced functioned without problems.
I have had some difficulty getting applications in the other computers to recognize the MX860 drivers. Online Support was helpful by telling me that the install proceedure needed to be run on each connected computer. The drivers were not simply loaded from the first computer. The documentation was not clear in this regard.
The print quality is very poor. Even after several cleaning cycles and print head alignment the quality does not match that of the i960, especially in black and white.
The scanner works well and the scanning software is convenient to use.

Fantastic machine! I’ve seen some comments about the footprint being to large – this is a multi-function machine and I don’t see how it could be made any smaller; size is perfect. Setup (wireless) was a snap – much easier than other wireless components I’ve used. Very easy to use (including the software) I would recommend to anyone and would absolutely buy again.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, reliable, multi sheet scanner
Cons: Slow Print Speed
