Absolute Scam

The filters last about 7-10 days and then give off a metallic taste, almost like they are designed to fail. In addition, you have to jump through hoops to recycle them.

ZeroWater Filter – Starts Great, Ends Fishy
on July 27, 2025
Posted by: Kabali
Length of ownership:6 months
I’ve now gone through three separate ZeroWater filters, and each time, the pattern has been the same: fresh, clean-tasting water at first, followed by a noticeably fishy or metallic taste after just a couple of weeks of normal use. This isn't a subtle issue – the off-putting flavor makes the water undrinkable.
I double-checked my tap water, storage conditions, and filter usage, and the result was consistent: something in the filter itself appears to degrade or leach after a short period. It’s extremely disappointing for a product that advertises "purity" and positions itself as premium.
This has all the markings of planned obsolescence — filters that degrade prematurely, pushing users to purchase replacements more frequently than seems reasonable. Whether intentional or due to poor quality control, the result is the same: a product that quickly becomes unusable and creates more waste.
What’s worse is that ZeroWater doesn't clearly warn consumers that this could happen or provide transparency about lifespan under real-world conditions. A filter that turns your drinking water fishy after 2-3 weeks? That’s unacceptable — and feels like a disgusting business practice for a product that's supposed to improve health and sustainability.
Verdict: Avoid unless you’re prepared to replace filters constantly — or tolerate water that tastes like a fish tank.

Thank you for contacting ZeroWater. As the quality of tap water and consumption rates differ greatly for everyone, we use gallons to estimate filter life instead of weeks or months. The higher the TDS reading the shorter the filter life and vice versa.
A change in the taste of the water is indicative of a filter that has been used beyond the point of exhaustion. The ions that are trapped inside the filter will start to leach out due to over saturation of the ion exchange resins, and due to the high TDS concentration, the taste of the water will change. Keep in mind that everything that the filter is filtering is still inside the filter and eventually will start leaching out when the filter goes beyond the capacity. Think about the filter as if it was a garbage container, once it is full, the garbage will start falling out if you keep putting more on top.
In order to avoid a change in the taste of the water, it is important to test your filtered water regularly and to change the filter when the TDS meter reads 006 on filtered water.

Price has doubled and they don’t last

I’m done, the price has doubled for these filters and my last 12 filters lasted a quarter of the usage of the previous 48. Going with a RO system!

Sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction. In an effort to keep up with the demand caused by the pandemic we are limiting the size of the filter packs available, currently offering only the 2, 3, and 4 packs of filters. We hope to have the larger filter packs available in the near future. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate you taking the time to make your concerns known.

The quality of the filters has eroded. I used to be able to replace a filter with ease. Now, it is extremely difficult to get a tight seal. Water leaks around the seal, which defeats the purpose. I am very disappointed that changing the filter causes me to strain myself and waste a lot of water before a satisfactory seal is made. Sorry I purchased so many filters.

I crave water now when i hated it before

I've used zero water for a few years now. I love the taste of the water. I never cared for water before. I drank soda and milk and had trouble forcing myself to hydrate with water. I crave water now from my filter. It is the only liquid refreshment I want. I smell the chemicals in tap water and bottled water has a tainted flavor. I cannot express how much i love these filters. I live check to check and the filters are expensive for me. I sometimes stretch the filters out but they are absolutely worth the money i pay for them. I tell everyone about Zero Water.

Why your filters sometimes do not work?

I recently bought a pack and both filters showed high number on the first use. Other filters make the water taste sour after one or two uses. I have normal municipal water and am trying to reduce chlorine aftertaste. So something is wrong. They do not filter as advertised.
