Thank you for contacting ZeroWater. During shipping some carbon can get knocked loose. What you are seeing in the reservoir is simply particles of that carbon. As this is part of the filtration process, although not pretty to look at, it is not harmful. Simply wipe out the reservoir with a paper towel; the carbon will not end up in the filtered water.
I have been using Zerowater for several years now. I always recommend their products to my friends and family. I recently was visiting a relative who lived in a city that used chlorine in its water system. The taste of chlorine was very strong. They used the "other" water filter pitcher system, yet you could still taste the chlorine. The rest of our stay there I drank bottled water.
