I had tried yoga classes a few times, but had always been frustrated by not knowing exactly how to perform the poses properly. Sometimes I could tell that something didn't feel right, but wasn't sure how to fix it... and in a big class, the instructor doesn't have time to adjust everybody. This DVD was the perfect solution for me. The pose guide went at a great pace and showed me how to make sure I was in alignment, and the two brief workouts are so quick that I never feel I don't have time for them, yet they definitely make me feel good. I'm going to buy another DVD or two with longer workouts to supplement this one, but for the real beginner or someone who is intimidated by the thought of starting a practice (like me!), this DVD is a great solution.
What a fabulous DVD!! Shows the basic poses and how to do it properly. Teaches all the wherefores and whys. Is also a good workout in itself. Highly recommended.
I first bought the Yoga for Beginners Kit (mat, brick, strap & DVD) and discovered that the DVD expected you to already be familiar with the poses, which I wasn't. So, since it was on sale on Gaiam.com, I purchased this DVD. Although it doesn't have all the poses out there, I think it gives you a great start. Rodney and Colleen are very thorough in explaining most of the sun salutation poses, and reinforcing how to do them properly. The two routines - rejuvenating practice and restorative practice - provide me with a good way to practice the poses and flow of breath together in a sequence. Since I'm such a beginner, it's been really good for me to work on my proper alignment and necessary pose modifications. I found that the practices are not too fast, not too hard, and not too simple, and the more I do them (almost every day), the more comfortable and easier it becomes, and I find that my flexibility is slowly increasing.
I like the varied routines for each morning, but I guess I was looking for a little more. I consider myself a beginner as far as skills go, but I like having options to make some of the moves harder. In some classes I take, the instructor gives a low and high option for certain moves. I wish this video included that because it gets slightly repetitive after a while. However, I like the speed at which the poses are explained. It's a nice, easy AM "wake me up" kind of DVD.
I purchased a Rodney Lee DVD previous to this one and having minimal experience was lost. I then purchased this DVD and went through the pose guide with the detailed instructions. I then progressed to some of the programs, and found them not just simple to follow but very enjoyable. The nice part is that with the limited time I have I have no travel time to deal with and can perform these exercizes at a time convient to me. When I equate the time I use this DVD and the enjoyment and physical benefits that I believe I am obtaining it may be one of lifes biggest bargins. I find that my posture and breathing have improved and I have many less aches and pains jogging.
I absolutely love this DVD. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and I cannot say enough good things about Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman. The video is the perfect pace for beginners, and as slow and low-key as it seems, I can feel it in my arms and legs. Practice guide is wonderful, and gives great tips on keeping proper form. I look forward to pursuing my yoga practice, and this is a great place to start. I do think the sections are a little too short, as one reviewer stated. It would have been nice to have a feature that lets you play both practices all the way through. But other than that, perfect!
