best printer I've ever owned

I've been wanting to replace my Canon Pixma printer almost since I first got it. It is not intuitive, and scanning was nightmarish with multiple complicated steps. I wanted a more user-friendly all-in-one printer, and one that offers AirPrint.
After a lot of research, I finally decided to buy this Brother model (from another site), and I am so happy with it! Setup was not difficult. I'm very methodical, reading all the directions twice, etc., and it probably took a little over 45 minutes to set it up and get two computers connected through our home network. Not complicated, just follow all the steps. I've only had this for a few days, but already I'm very pleased with the purchase.
The touchscreen works great and is very responsive, and you can even tilt it upwards to make it easier to see and use. The jack for the telephone/fax line is under the copier platen, not in the back where you can't see the jack and it is difficult to connect or disconnect (we use the same line for the phone, so we're frequently plugging it in and unplugging it). You just lift open the platen, and there is easy access to the jack, and a channel to feed the line out the back. Airprint is easy- I printed an email from my iPhone with no problem, no need to install the Brother software to do that.
Scanning is ridiculously easy compared to my old Canon (good riddance!). Put a document on the platen, press scan on the touchscreen, and if it's just a pdf you're saving to a file, all you have to do is press ok. That's it! Two buttons! No complicated menu to go through on your computer. Just touch "scan", and "ok", and seconds later the document is on your hard drive. There are other options, very easy via the touchscreen- you can scan it to email, to flash drive, to image, etc., all just as simple.
One nice bonus, this printer doesn't wreak havoc with MS Word like my Canon did. When it was selected as the default printer, the cursor in Word would flicker nonstop, making typing a maddening experience. This Brother does not have that effect. Yay!
Print quality is great for text documents, even in "fast draft" mode. Overall, this is one of the best purchases I've ever made. I am thrilled with this printer and can't think of a single con about it. Can't wait to have reasons to use it more! I know this it touted as a printer for small business, but it's a very suitable for home use. A high-quality printer for a reasonable price.

Better than previous printer

I find this printer to be better than the two Canon printers I owned before. They both failed within the first 2 years of use. I have used my new Brother printer only for copying, printing and scanning, so far. The only negative is that it is noisier than my previous printers. Also, I must say that the cost of ink cartridges is outrageously high. You warn that if you use other than Brother cartridges it may "damage" the printer. I would like to know how that could happen. The cost of alternate brand cartridges is often less than half what Brother charges.

Good Deal

For the price it was a good deal. The color is not as brilliant as I had hoped. The price of the cartridges are little more than the cartridges with my previous printer. The advertisement led me to believe the cartridges would be cheaper.

Great home office All-in-one

I bought this printer to replace another brands A_I_O that didn't last more than a year. This printer prints much faster and the picture quality is great. The printer was easy to install, even by a novice, additionally, I connected to the wireless network myself with the instructions provided. It runs quietly, a feature that is important to me. The Brother MFC-J5520DW is solidly built and I have no doubt that I will get my money's worth from its use.

Good All-in-one

This printer/scanner/fax is relatively easy to use and delivers high quality printing in both black and color. Faxing is easy and scanning quality good. What makes this an even better choice is the good customer service. Our printer just quit one day about eight months after we got it with no explanation. Not only did Brother provide great trouble shooting service, but when they couldn't figure it out, they sent out a new one in four business days with a return label to ship the old one back. Thanks for making it easy!

Love Brother MFC-J550DW

It was easy to set up wirelessly with a USB cable. I love the ink level display on the front screen so I don't have to go into the menu to see the ink levels. It is a little slower than my last printer but I still prefer this printer. Easy to scan and copy.

I have three Brother laser printers and found them very easy to operate. This5520 is a color printer but requires considerable more work to print on multiple kinds of paper. Instructions are vague on some functions like can 5X7 photo paper be used.
To use all its functions the printer must be in an area that is open above it or you cant get to the paper handling devices on the back.
