Not so sure about this printer...

I just got this printer 2 days ago, after reviewing many multifunction printers. I purchased because of its lower initial cost and the fact that the ink cost is lower than most for this model. However, it has some pretty funky design 'features' which I would consider more to be flaws. The paper tray is the worst. Every time I slide it out to put paper in, it has to be coaxed back into the slot. Comes out easily but goes in like it was not designed to go in that way. I feel like I will break something by trying to get the paper tray back into the machine. Tonight I printed a multipage document for the first time. By 'multi', I mean only 4 pages. Twice it jammed, displaying a 'paper not fed' message. Indeed, I found a jammed paper each time I pulled the paper tray out and each time struggled to replace the paper tray. The paper feeds from the back so you MUST remove the entire tray to fill the paper.
Who was responsible for hiding the various cable connections under the scanner? This is crazy. I had a hard time figuring out where they were, even after staring at the schematic for a while. I lifted up the scanner cover, expecting them to be there, but no. Finally, I lifted up the entire scanner assembly and there found 4 cable input slots (2 phone lines and a USB and an Ethernet port). Why would someone think this was a good place to put these? What was wrong with the traditional back or side, exterior of the printer, which has served us so well for lo these many years? I think someone just wanted to design something 'different' but did not really consider the practicality or logic of these choices.
The wireless feature works pretty well and was not that hard to configure. I am still trying to work out the scanning feature, though. One of the reasons I picked this unit was its ability to do duplex scanning in one pass. I have not yet discovered how to do it.
The jury is still out on this purchase. I saved the box, although it is outside in the hot sun, hopefully it won't be too faded if I decide to return it.

Excellent print quality. Easy setup

Excellent print quality in color and BW. Easy setup. Connected to IOS and Windows devices flawlessly via WIreless. Connecting FAX and Ethernet cables cumbersome but that is only a onetime setup so not an issue. Excellent customer service. Highly recommend product.

Saves ink with very good results

I had some difficulty getting this printer to work as a duplex printer. After calling customer service, very nice folks btw, we decided I should uninstall and reinstall the software. That did the trick. My only other concern is that the tray that holds the printed pages is very flimsy and could easily break. I am impressed by how little ink I have used when compared to the HP product I previously used.

Purchased this Brother MFC-J5520DW from Costco to replace a 3yr old Epson that was malfunctioning. This Brother printer was easy to load on my network and has been easy to use so far. The printer has a very small footprint relative to any of my older Epson or HP printers. The only hiccup I experienced was finding the correct print drivers. I did not use the disk, did everything online.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I haven't had this printer long enough to assess performance for an adequate review. The printer was easy to unpack and to set up. So far, it has worked perfectly except for a couple of operator errors (i.e. operators selecting the Fax instead of Printer for a print job). It offers a lot of features for the money. Hope it lasts a long time.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Much better than the HP Photosmart Printer I was using. Better constructed and smoother performance. Plus, the ink cartridges are more productive at a lower price.

Great Printer but.........

I absolutely LOVE the printer. Everything about it is great. However, what I didn't like is that in the installation process (on 2 laptops and 1 desktop), when trying to set it as the default printer one one of my laptops, I got error code 0x00000709. I called the support desk and got a very nice lady who took me through all the steps of installation again. Even though I told her the error code, she ignored that and made me do the installation again. When it came up with the same error code, she told me I had to call the manufacturer of my machine, which is a Dell. After doing my own research, I found this is a common problem on lots of different types of printer installations, however, no one tells me what the error is or how to fix it. So, I cannot print anything from my own personal laptop. When my husband prints from his, however, it is perfect in every way.
I would recommend this to a friend!
