Great Camera

I thought I would give this camera a try because it had excellent reviews and it also had every feature I wanted in a camera plus more. Most internet sites providing reviews on the G10 averaged 4.5-5.0 each and evrytime, so I knew I had to "at least" give it a try. I was very excited when I finally made the purchase.
The automatic mode takes wonderful pictures right out of the box; however there are other modes on the camera that can produce even better pictures, i.e.:
Manual mode: Where you almost have complete control over the outcome of the picture. Working with manual mode iwas kind of difficult during my initial use, because I have only used a point and shoot camera all my life. The fuctions and names were confusing at first, but after studying the manual a few times and continual use, my efforts were starting to pay off. Of course, if you are a photographer that already have experience with a DSLR, manual mode will probably be rather easy.
There were other modes like: priority aperture, shutter speed, custom and more I like to play with just to see how much a photo would differ if I changed the apperture and/or shutter speed.
I like to use custom and auto modes a lot, because they are the easiest modes to use and they provide me with a great picture with no fuss over the controls.
The G10 has some in camera fuctions that allows one to make modifications to a photo without having to hook it up to a PC. I found that one function in particular, "Vivid" in the "My Colors" menu, to be outsatnding. It made a great picture look infallible, professional even. Everytime I used that particlar in camera function, I would get great feedback. If the in camera functions aren't enough to produce that wonderful photo, I also had the option to use the software that downloads to my PC, which allowed me to make even more adjustments to my pictures. The software has two aps, one being the normal, which allows you to adjust the colors, red eye, crop and contrast. The other allows you to adjust the same but in far more detail(in very small increments) and also gives you the option to adjust the Red, Green and Blue.
I am still learning how to use this camera, every mode and every function, every chance I get , so hopefully one day I can become a profeesional photographer. I'm glad I made the choice to get this camera because it allows me to get a lot lof practice on some of the advanced features that you would normally only find on a DSLR; minus the size and price of a DSLR.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, good battery life, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Camera for my wife

This is our fourth Canon (G2, Rebel, 30D and G10). Bought it for my wife prior to our trip to Maui in January '09. After using it for a couple of weeks and seeing the superb picture quality, we decided to leave the 30D at home this trip. My wife loves the image stabilization feature and it's light enough that she takes it everywhere. KUDOs to Canon on another outstanding product.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Best G-series yet ...

Don't let the nay-sayers dissuade you from grabbing one of these TERRIFIC cameras! It's my 4th G-series and it's -hands-down - the best one so far. RAW is back and the wider 28mm (35mm camera equivalent) end of the superb Canon zoom lens will astound you. Street price is a little high but so is the quality. Unless you MUST have a dSLR for some reason - shooting Madison Avenue modeling ads or something - you can't go wrong wih a Canon G10. PERFECT vacation camera!!!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, good battery life, dig!c 4 images are surreal
Cons: fixed lcd

What else do you need?

While I toyed with film SLRs years ago, I had more recently decided to go with the "snapshot" type digital for the fast paced family lifestyle pictures I found myself taking most often. I eventually became frustrated and bored with the picture quality and limited abilities of such cameras.
Not wanting to get back into SLR cameras (digital this time) due to expense and cumbersome nature of the breed, I purchased the Canon G10.
I have been very pleased with the operation and most of all, the picture quality. The veriety of settings keeps me interested when I get the chance to "play" and the rest of the time this camera is fast and easy to use. I love it!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Great design, too many pixels

I love the design of this camera. It's the only compact camera to have separate dials for mode, ISO, and exposure compensation. The 3" display screen is amazing. However, this camera has too many pixels for it's small sensor. Noise shows up as early as ISO 100. Anything beyond ISO400 is worthless. Great design, I just wish the low light performance was better.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, durable
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Heavy/Bulky

Smart buy for the savy photographer

I purchased the G10 for what is was and what it could do. I don't dwell on the features it might not have.
I'ts an incredibly versitile camera. The macro capabilities have allowed me to expand my copy work 10 fold without alot of hassle.
The size and quality of the images is very satisfying.
I am able to make photo's without intimadating my subjects and It has more than enough in-camera controls. If you require more features or control, buy a different Canon.
The live view is great! The manual functions are very easy to use. The in-camera processor seems to be quite good. The G10's optics give excellent images.
I feel I made an excellent choice when I purchased this camera.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, good macro features

Great Tag-Along camera
on March 25, 2009

I've used G-cameras (currently G9 and G10), ever since the G2, to carry around when I don't want to be burdened by my SLR equipment. I miss the old f/2.0 lens; wish the current G's had one equally fast, but what I get with the G10 is otherwise exactly what I want: a camera with splendid versatility for everyday use, for vacation travel, or emergency use when something unexpected comes along. Comments have been made here about acquiring the G10 RAW images in Photoshop, but Adobe issues new upgrades for "Camera RAW" every 2 or 3 months, and the last two upgrades have accomodated the G10. Download and install the newest upgrade! The G9 lens has a significantly longer focal length when zoomed out than does the G10; the G10's lens gives you a shorter wideangle view. Using both cameras is sometimes a nuisance, though, since they require different batteries and thus need different chargers and a double dose of extra batteries if you're journeying with the two of them. Both cameras have optical finders that are useful in showing you the coverage you'll get, despite the fact that there'll be more imagery on the memory card than shows in the finders. The 2 extra megapixels of the G10 don't make much difference, but if I have to choose just one, it will be the G10 simply because its predecessor's basic design has had experiental tweakings in the G10 that the G9 lacks.
Try it; you'll like it.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, great for travel
Cons: noisy at high iso settings

g10 what happend the featurs
on November 3, 2008

First of all i have alot of Canon cameras. My review is on the midrange camera like the G10 and G9. I got the G10 to replace my G9. First let me start by saysing the overall quality of the camera is great. Pictue quality is excelent. Low light picture taking is good. speed is good.
I got the G10 the first day it was released, unfortunatly i was dissipointed to find out that alot of the featurs were missing that the G9 had. One of the great things on the G9 was all the settings, adjustments, and featurs that were in it. Unfortunatly alot has been remove and distilled down out of the G10, there is no longer any more time laps videio, no compact video for emailing, avi video was removed and replased with mov format, many other things are missing also, make sure you look at the canon site for all the specs becuse other sites have missinformation. the one main good thing that is there is the +/- stop exposor vallue that is on the camera. that is the only thing that is making me keep it and not send it back. this camera turnd into a more expensicve point and shoot now. where the g9 was closer to the DSLR series with options. today i would not recomend this camera to a friend. i hope they will add the featurs back that was in the g9 that was removed from g10. if they do i would highly recomend this camera.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
