The compact for DSLR users
on April 26, 2009

I primarily shoot with a 5D Mark II and a 30D. However, there are many times where a DSLR isn't practical or handy. My wife uses a SD1000 that she loves, but the total lack of control drives me nuts.
I originally used a S80, which I really enjoyed. It's main drawback, and what prompted a replacement, was lack of RAW. I flirted with a G9, but the lack of 28 mm wide angle was a deal breaker. Enter the G10.
The G10 is a superb little camera. In many ways, it's more DSLR than compact. In fact, I'd kill for a dedicated ISO control on my 5D Mark II, but I digress. The images (in good light) are gorgeous, the control set unmatched, and the build quality equal that of Canon's upper end DLSRs. I feel no worry or stress capturing important shots with this camera when my DSLR isn't available. I know, with the RAW file, I'll get a shot that's nearly as good as its big brothers would capture.
The most significant way in which it's decidedly not a DSLR however, is low light performance. AF in low light is very spotty if it works at all, and anything above ISO 400 is unusable without post processing in an app like Aperture or even Noise Ninja. Above 800 and it has to be an incredible shot for me to keep it. For this reason, I use flash far more frequently than I'd like, and usually my 430EX II, which starts to pull me out of compact territory...

Outstanding

Excellent camera. Great for on-the-go when the digital SLR is too bulky. Quality is outstanding and I am able to enlarge up to 11x14 without difficulty. OK for action shots, but not as good as the SLR at sporting events. However, can take the G10 to events where an SLR with a telephoto lens is not allowed and can get quality shots. Easy to use technique of bracketing with this camera- easier than SLR.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

This camera ruled in the jungle

I recently returned from Peru from the Amazonas region where this camera was the big hit. I took 2 batteries for 2 weeks and the largest card I could find. The first battery lasted 10 days and with over 400 shots and a number of movies. It's rugged, easy to boot up, and the high speed shutter really was an excellent treat. Took some awesome fast action shots. The kids from the village loved the playback feature on the LCD screen. I can't recommend this camera enough. Like someone else said" it doesn't replace my SLR", but for trips it my only choice. - it's better than my SLR. This camera rocks - big time.....
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, picture review zoom, quality close ups, manual mode options
Cons: lense choices
I would recommend this to a friend!

Canon PowerShot G10

I'm no tech expert, but I'm having a great time with my G10. I have a SLR, but get tired of lugging all the extras around. For little gatherings, and quick shots it's great for me. And it has all the bells and whistles if I need them. So far I have no complaints, and can't see why I'd have any in the future. I really like the panorama feature. If I have any low light problems, I'll switch to my SLRr. So far I've had none.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Excellent travel camera

The PowerShot G10 delivers both excellent photos and video, making it an excellent camera for photographing children in many (but not all) situations. I still prefer the faster shutter response of an SLR for photographing the high speed action in children's games or sports. I sometimes miss some fast action shots with my G10, but the ease of use and convenience of the G10 sometimes get me some shots that I would otherwise miss. There are some trade-offs in both directions.
I use the PowerShot G10 extensively for recording video of children's activities. The video startup time is much faster than it is with my mini DV camcorder. The G10 video quality is very good to excellent. When photographing children, you never know whether you need a still camera or a video camera. The G10 can do either by simply turning a switch.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, excellent image quality, excellent video
Cons: shutter lag, limited optical zoom
I would recommend this to a friend!
