Aloha as an amature photographer, I have to say this camera by far exceeds every other digi. cam i have ever bought. both video and stills are the best. I have archived everything in my life with it last year since i bought this camera in Germany, I was on tour with Simply Red and the memories that this camera has given me is absolutely incredible!!! the very best than all others, none will replace it until i become a full fledged photographer. I'm even thinking about doing a video shoot with this camera and making a DVD for sale and see if anyone could tell the difference between some High Def video camera and the G10!!! wish me luck!!!

By far the best "low end" camera today! The G10 has all of the features that a novice and most pros need in a camera with so many options and ways to expand the camera's potential. The 14.7 megapixles are very helpfull in getting the best image quality possable for such a small camera.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

This camera makes me feel like a pro! The manual that comes with it is pretty weaksauce, but if you play around with it, you learn it quickly.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Only right for a few...in my opinion

I really enjoy this camera and highly recommend it...on one main condition. My favorite feature about this camera is that it shoots in RAW. If you're not going to use this format in combination with a photo-editing program, I suggest you save your money and search for a model with similar features to the G10, sans the price tag. If you do choose to stick with the G10, I have a feeling you already know what you're getting into. The camera's capabilities are awesome (although it obviously isn't a dSLR).
As others mention, noise can be an issue, but if you stick with lower ISO settings, great result are possible. From what I've seen, even with dSLRs, the G10's noise issues are no surprise or major drawback. In fact, while the higher ISO settings do produce substantial noise, they also make low-light shooting a more realistic possibility than other compacts - not for framing, but certainly for capturing the moment.
I've been using this camera since December '08 and I like it more each time I pull it out. I'm in Patagonia right now and, while, of course, I wish I had a $5,000 dSLR with every lens imaginable (and the time and patience to use them all), I haven't once regretted passing over entry-level dSLR models for my G10.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, good (not great) low-light performance

I read a number of reviews of the G10 and I was apprehensive about the purchase because of negative comments regarding too many pixels, optical lens too small, grainy photos at high ISOs, but with a 90 day return policy from the retailer, I bought the camera to check it out. I am an advanced amateur. I only print up to 5X7 size. This is a camera that you can point and shoot with amazing results using the various auto features. But, it will also perform much more than that in the manual modes. If reading the manual is not for you, then you're paying too much for the features within this camera. It is sophisticated. Although it is somewhat intuitive, the modes available are not familiar to most amateurs. I am very happy that I took a chance. This is much more camera than I expected and the results are superlative when using the proper settings. I took a test shot using manual setting, adjusted, into a dark corner under a desk early in the morning (the subject was visible but very darkly lit). I had to set the camera on the chair to keep it still but the shutter opened for a couple seconds and the detail showed up as good as if it were taken in full light. I'm happy with the G10 and I believe if users apply themselves to learning about its many features, they will become smarter photographers and they will end up with some FANTASTIC photos.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Fantastic little camera with big capabilities!

I love this camera! I have been shooting digitally and professionally for several years and needed a small compact and fully controllable camera that shots RAW files and JPGS. This is it. It provides full manual exposure controlled with great information on the LCD showing exposure and compensation, etc. Controls are fast and easy to access. It made being in the field (12 days backpacking) a great joy when it came to photography. I did not have to carry my SLR and several lens. I had everything I needed in this one little package. The battery life was excellent given my circumstances. I carried two batteries and took approximately 900 images with flash and LCD on low (with plenty of illumination). I did have to conserve the batteries as there was no recharge capability on this trip but overall I used power without the need to dwell on it. I was very pleased with power usage. The image quality in Macro was fantastic. There is chromatic aberrations in wide angle that need to be corrected during RAW file processing. I would prefer a bit more optical zoom capability even with the lens extender. Also, it would be sweeter if it had better image quality in low light. I would like to attach filters such as a circular polarizer and UV haze. It can use a ridge around the LCD or to be covered with tempered glass which would help to protect it from wear especially from the carrying strap. Overall this is a great camera if you want quick and agile manual control. I dropped the camera from 3 to 4 feet and it does not show any impact marks and it kept working without incident. This camera made shooting fun! Good job CANON!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance

Great camera except for 1 minor drawback!

I really love this camera! It does very nearly everything I want. The 14.7Mpix sensor allows for extreme cropping with a still very usable final image. The only very minor complaint I have, which I knew before I bought it, is that there is not a B shutter speed available. Altough there are very, very few times I would want to use an open shutter setting, they do happen. Especially when I would like to take night stars photos.
While using a 2.2x teleconverter and maximum digital zoom, I was able to take a recognizable image of my house from 5 miles away and 3000 feet above it!! Using this same setup, I took a similar photo of a 25 foot diameter observatory on a mountain top 20 miles away and 7000 feet above my house.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
