G10 Best point & shoot

I've owned a G2 for years, recently gave to my nephew, still working great. I purchased the G10 to complement my Canon 20D SLR for when I air travel and can't carry-on all my SLR gear. The G10 works great!

Good camera

Pros: Excellent quality, sturdy build, easy-to-access features. Cons: Not much optical zoom, not that good in low light, no HD video, a bit big.
Overall this is an excellent camera. It feels good to hold and it is super easy and quick to change the ISO, the mode, and the exposure with the three dials on top. This is much better than going through menus. I also like the fact that you can delete a photo with just 2 pushes of a button. The LCD screen is excellent. I wish the programmable button would accept Movie Mode like my SD 870 did (very handy when taking movie clips of children). I am generally very pleased with this camera. I will probably also buy the new SD 780 to have a really small pocketable camera. (The smaller the camera the more likely I am to have it on me.)

What great shots. I love the stabilizer. I even caught a squirrel scratching his head. That is how clear and how much detail I am getting.

64bit RAW support
on November 10, 2008

I've only had this camera for a couple hours (just bought it tonight) so I can't give a complete and objective opinion right now. But so far I am very impressed except one thing... There apparently is no support for this camera's RAW files in Windows Vista 64 bit. The RAW codec downloadable from Canon is only supported in Vista 32 bit and so far (apparently) support in Photoshop / Bridge CS3 only goes as high as the G9. The included software can open and edit the RAW images but I need support in Bridge and Photoshop. Canon... When will there be 64 bit support?

I purchased the G10 to have with me all the time rather than carrying my 40D constantly. I have had the camera about three months and in general am very pleased with the camera. The build quality is very good, images using lower ISO are excellent. Noise in the upper ISO is somewhat disturbing but I don't generally shoot above 200 so this is not a real problem with me. I love the control knobs on top of the camera, it makes it so easy to make changes on the run. I would have rated this camera all fives if it wasn't for the noise level at higher ISO's.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance

Great Travel Camera

There are a few minor problems with the G10 - LCD doesn't handle bright light sources properly. That said, it's a terrific travel camera. It's so nice to be able to leave my pro SLR gear at home when I'm not on assignment and just take my G10.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: lcd performance with bright light sources
I would recommend this to a friend!
