My first DSLR after years of SLR and in the last few years, point and shoots. This is amazing! Althought the amount of info can intially be overwhelming, it's driving me to become more invovled with photography again. It's fun to use and the results are phenominal. I think they are comparable to the 35mm film results that I got for years with my Canon F1/F1N with FD lenses years ago. I'm using the 18-135mm EFS lense as a starter and I'm pleased with it's sharpness to this point. A great camera.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Great camera

I've owned the 50D for close to a year now and am nearly 10,000 pictures in! This camera just makes you want to take pictures. All the time.
Moving from a point and shoot, I was worried about portability. But I've found that I still take the 50D with me where ever I go with no issues. It just takes a little getting used to. The camera is on the heavy side(again, compared to the P&S) and I would recommend a different camera strap than the supplied Canon strap. It's not overly comfortable, but not enough to lower my 5 star rating.
This camera has great battery life. I recently shot well over 400 images at an indoor event on a 3/4 charged battery with no issues.
A step up from the kit lens is recommended. I recently got the 85mm F1.8 and the IQ is remarkable. I'm aggressively saving my pennies for a 70-200 f4L IS.
For my use, I couldn't ask for anything more.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

50D is simply an awesome camera

I have been using Canon SLR cameras since the AE-1 P, and the 50D is simply the best.
The 50D has a high quality ergonomic feel, it is rugged and weatherproof, and it allows you to become a much better photographer. I have used the 50D at weddings; sporting events; NASA launches; at sea in bad weather; in the desert in extreme heat; in rain; snow; and the 50D has captured some incredible pictures. I especially like the rugged alloy metal case, and the “sport shooting” mode with 6.3 frames per second. I hope that one day soon Canon offers a full frame DSLR with the 50D’s feature set.
Pros: ergonomic high quality feel, alloy metal case, variety of pre set shooting options, sports mode with 6.3 frames per second, good viewfinder, quality 3” display, easy to program with custom settings
Cons: wish that it was full frame with the same feature

Great battery

. I get over 2100 exposures on a battery. After listening to all of the negative comments about battery life, I was concerned. No need to be, just as there is no need to leave your bright image display on all the time.
My regular camera is a 1D and so I am use to not being able to look at the pictures until I see them on the big screen at home.. If you think the 50 D is heavey, try carrying the 1D w/a 400MM 2.8.
I got the 50 D to shoot in low light. It is everything Canon said it was, maybe more. Try shooting with H2 in very low light. You will be amazed.
The knob on the top left for changing modes should have a lock so that it cannot turn unless you want it to.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: function knob

I have owned a Canon AE-1 since the mid 70's, and I don't have a cell phone. That said, I was hesitant in going digital because of changing to a totally different mode of taking pictures. I made the right decision in changing to the Canon 50D. I took my time reading everything I could about this camera, and the flexibility of the digital experience and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance of the camera as well as myself. If you too have a hesitation changing over to the digital age, know that it will improve your pictures, ease of creativity, and increase your enjoyment of photography
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, logical controls, similar size/weight of vintage slr's, the canon credibilty, easy support access, sold as a kit w/lense
Cons: noisy, have to read the directions

Great camera!!!

I purchased the 50d to compliment my 40D. I love this camera!
The image quality is superb and the noise isn't bad until around 1600. I love the sharp and crisp lcd view screen, much better that the 40D. My camera is used for portrait and wedding work where it really excels. The only issue I have is that it takes so long to convert the files from raw to tiffs in DPP, about 3 times as long as my 40d. It don't know if this is a problem with the DPP or what. The battery life is great. I've have shot over 500 shots in a sitting and never once has the battery needed to be changed. I would highly recommend the camera to anyone.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great image quality great lcd screen

Absolutely Great Camera

After the reviews in several US and British camera magazines, I went to the Canon e-Store and purchased the 50D. This is an u[upgrade from the XTi that I have been using for the last couple of years. The 50D has provided me with everything I wanted and needed in a DSLR and a camera that I will continue to grow with. The 28-135 MM IS lenses coupled with the fast auto focus system provide superb 15 meg pixel images. In the last couple of months, in my business and personal use I have shot over 6000 images and everyone has been perfect.
The battery life is exceptional and recharge with the provided charger is fast.
All in all a great photography system
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life

This is an outstanding camera. I have had the 20 D, 30 D, 40 D and now the 50 D. I use it with the Canon 100-400 is zoom lens and the 70-200 f 2.8 L is lens and get outstanding results. I feel that the auto setting is excellent and many times better than my manual settings depending on circumstances Long battery life. Canon technical support is always willing to answer my questions which means a lot
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
