Incredible Camera!

I have researched the 7D and 50d extensively. I decided on the 50d based on the excellent reviews and price.
The 50D is amazing and the best Canon camera I've owned (and I've like all the previous models). The pictures are remarkably sharp with vibrant colors. One feature I particularly like is the ability to customize the settings to your individual shooting preferences. I also like the ergonomics and ease of use. My former camera is the XSI. It's a great camera but can't compare to the 50D. This is a much more professional model.
The 50D may not have all the bells and whistles of the 7D but I can't imagine that the picture quality could be that much better. For me, that's the bottom line. At its current price, this camera is a real bargain.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

I either had a bad 40D or I got an exceptional 50D because the 50Dis the best APC sized camera I've ever owned. I'm getting great images at ISO 3200 and very usable images at ISO 6400. I sold my 40D when I heard of the release date of the 50D, which left me with the 5D and a XTi. I did the same with the 5D when the 5D MKII release date was announced. That left me with the 50D as top dog. I did all my studio work with the 50D and the results were phenominal. I liked the 50D in the studio better than the 5D. Now that I have the 5D MKII, I have no concerns about my 5D MKII ever being down because I know that the 50D will fill in wonderfully. The 40D was horrible at ISO 800 and above. I still have some images from the 20D that looked better than the 40D when both were shot at ISO 3200. The extra resolution really works for me in the studio as well event images. Trust me, the 50D is no 5D MKII, but it works great as a backup to it, The images look a lot alike at !SO 800 and below and still will match up quite well at higher ISOs in a wedding. Better than someone else shooting another brand camera while working with you. Now that I own both the 50D and the 5D MKII, I am enjoying the best times of my digital photography life, which is just about 10 years old now. My photography life is 24 yo and this is very closeto the 6x7 film cameras I used to shoot.

I have been using a Rebel XTi for a couple years now and decided to step it up a level. The 50D is a huge improvement, and the difference in tiers between the XXXD and XXD models is significant. There is still some noise shooting in very dim lighting at 3200 ISO, but only in very poorly lit rooms. Image quality is otherwise spectacular. Combined with just a 430EX flash, some great pictures can be taken. All flashed shots seemed to turn out much better on the 50D compared to the XTi.
The camera itself is a lot larger physically than the XTi, but fits much better in my hands. There is more weight as well, but with the easier-to-hold grip and weight ballance of some heavy lenses, I have no complaints there.
My only real complaint is the placement of the on/off switch. The XTi has it conveniently placed by the dial on the top right of the camera, making it fast to turn on or off just by holding it naturally. The 50D's power switch is in an awkward location in the bottom in the middle, and requires a second hand or some contortion to turn it on. I haven't found a comfortable way to turn it on quickly.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: awkward placement for on/off

Incredible Camera

After 35 years of Canon 35MM film (AE1, T70, Elan 2E) I made the switch to digital with the new Canon 50D. I love the bulk of the camera and how incredibly easy it is to shoot. I have only had the camera for about two months and have already created over 700 images. Many are low light wildlife shots, as well as a lot of Christmas lights shot without flash. I have found the low light images to be very low on digital noise even when dialing up the ISO to 1600. The camera is ready to shoot right out of the box. By the time the battery was fully charged I had read most of the owner’s manual and familiarized myself with the major controls. I shoot most of my nature shots in RAW and then finish on the computer. I have had to do little adjusting other than converting to jpeg or making the image smaller for printing. The camera is that easy to use and the images are extremely high quality. I have used enough of the 50D’s features to be able to switch ISO, white balance, AF, AE, and other functions with ease. The auto bracketing feature is a favorite for scenic nature shots and adjusting the f-stops altered automatically is an easy menu change. The 6 frames per second was useful in capturing a coyote hunting his lunch in Rocky Mountain National Park a few weeks back. I was able to capture the hunt, crawl, jump, catch, and consume with very clear sharply focused images. All in all, at 15.1 megapixels, this is all the camera a beginner through serious amateur and semi-pro needs.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use

Superb Travel Camera

I purchased this camera to replace a Digital Rebel before a trip to the Big Island. I took pictures in a variety of light conditions from rainy days in a rain forest, bright sunshine at the beach and lava flows at night. I wasn't disappointed with how most of the pictures came out There definitely is a learning curve with this camera. The strength of this camera is creative control. If you want to use the built in light meter with manual or programmed settings, then this is the camera for you. The versatility is outstanding. It is particularly good for bracketing. If you want a point and shoot camera, then buy a simpler camera. I read some of the cons: yes this camera is relatively heavy, but only compared to a pocket camera. The controls aren't complicated if you understand the theory. There is at least one 3rd party manual that gives good suggestions on how to use the features. It adds info to the Canon manual. The battery lasts long enough, but buy an extra battery anyway. Download your images with a card reader, not directly from the camera to save battery life. The RAW images require an update for Photoshop. If you are worried about noise, use a mono/tripod and a lower ISO. For a second camera I have a Canon Powershot SD990 to slip in my pocket. Overall a perfect travel combination.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Solid Operation, easy to use

Excellent Camera for an amateur and a pro.

This is my first DSLR camera and I love it. Until May this year I used mostly Canon SLR cameras and some digital P&S. When I decided to go to digital I was not sure what to get, either a digital Rebel or one from XXD line? Since I have rather large hands I started focusing the XXD line so I looked through many (I say many) reviews for the 40D and 50D. When I finally decided I went with the 50D for many reasons. I know that it may sound childish, but the extra 5MP makes a big difference no matter how you look at it. Especially when you need to bring detail or edit your pictures and you still have plenty of room to play and keep the image quality high. The second feature was its relatively fast AF (my kids are fast too, but I still manage to take great pics). There are lots and lots of other features that others already mentioned, but I think that the feature that tipped the scale in favor of the 50D was the Autofocus Micro Adjustment. This last feature is a real life saver and I cannot live without it. I was able to calibrate my four lenses and achieved perfect autofocus sharpness thus allowing for even faster AF. Some of the things I dislike in the 50D are 1st the slid background color of the histogram in Live View mode (I hope one day this will be transparent by firmware upgrade), the second it fairly loud shutter release and third is the battery killer LV mode I also noticed (like the reviewer before me) that by flashing the 50d to the latest firmware changes the image processing algorithms thus making improvement on image quality of your photos. I would highly recommend this Camera to anyone from an amateur to a pro.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, af micro adjustment
Cons: noisy, Short battery life

Great Upgrade!

This body is a stupendous upgrade from my previous Rebel XSi. It performs incredibly at high ISO speeds. I never use a flash (built-in or attached via hot shoe) and I still get light in extremely low-lit situations/environments. If upgrading, there is certainly a learning curve to this body. The 50d's ability to shoot at such high fps is great, especially combined with it's low noise. Great camera.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: Short battery life

I wanted an upgrade from my XTi and went to the local camera shop to look. I intended to purchase the 40D, but came home with the 50D instead. Wow, I'm glad I spent the extra $$$ for the 50! There are some really nice improvements; 15.1 Megapixel (that's nearly 50% more than the 40D), much better rear LCD, better noise reduction at higher ISO settings, and the new live view button makes it a snap to get to. With good glass, the camera takes exceptional pictures, much better than the XTi.
If you're sitting on the fence, looking to upgrade to a semi-pro camera, you can't do better than this one! I am so pleased with this camera and I think you will be too.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, portable, excellent ergonomics
