Inconsistent to say the least

Bought this to replace my 1D mark II. Miss the Mark II more than anything. The lighting is completely inconsistent, washed out, etc. Pictures are blurry when using any of the outside AF points. I thought the new sensor would be an improvement. I was wrong to say the least.

Worst camera ever

My main photography is wildlife. I started with the 30D then went to the 40D. Then i down graded to the 50D. The images are very noisy even at 100 ISO. I found the image less noisy in jpeg. I have 2 of these 50d cameras. Both are the same. I wish I didn't sell my 40d's now. They were much sharper. On the positive side when you want to use the full frame and do not crop at all image quality isn't to bad. I have some building images that are good. i also have a deer picture that is very nice but I used the full picture as it was taken. Just not a good wildlife camera st all.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time
Cons: Poor image quality

Don't buy this camera

This camera is a stop gap camera. The 40D is a much better deal. More mega pixels are not the answer. It should have had a better AF system in place. In AI Sevor I find that it step focuses, not very accurate much of the time. Buy the 40D instead.
Pros: Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Two Strikes

I am a chemist by trade. I have been taking wedding and portrait images for 30 years as a side line. I also shoot quite a bit of nature and scenery. I was upgrading from 20D to the 50D, while waiting to see if the 5D would be upgraded to a Mark III. NY mail order 50D arrived and was compared to 20D image quality, which I am very pleased with. The very first image taken with the 50D I noticed seemed out of focus. Both cameras were set the same and the same 17-85 Canon lens used on both. All images taken with the 50D were soft, not nearly as crisp as the 20D images. More resolution on the 50D, but soft. Ordered a 2nd 50D. It tested exactly the same as the 1st one, with soft focus. Returned both. All the features of the 50D were great. I suspect Canon would be able to repair the problem with either camera body, but I was not willing to risk it. I will likely wait to see if a 5D Mark III comes out in 2010.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

why would you make a camera with a compressed raw setting that cannot be used in adobe products. It doesn't make sense to me.
Cons: Missing features/settings, can't process sraw images in adobe products

Incredibly disappointed

While the price and feature list was great, the picture quality is horrible. All pictures taken with the 50D were soft or seemingly out of focus. I've tried it with Canon lenses 85mm 1.8, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8 IS and the results are the same; soft unusable photos. Every shot taken with this camera had been thrown away. Thank God I didn't trade in my 20D. I'm sending in my 50D for service. Perhaps I got a bad copy? Based on my experience, I would NOT RECOMMEND this camera at all.
Pros: quiet, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

High ISO performance worse than 40D Reduced dynamic range in the shadow areas compared to EOS 40D Per-pixel detail not as good as on good 10 or 12 megapixel cameras High-end lenses required to get the most out of the camera Poor white balance performance under artificial light Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light) Live view not as accurate as on 40D (framing very slightly off-center, in contrast detect AF mode not possible to magnify right out to the extreme corners)
Pros: Superior build quality, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, Short battery life
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Unsatified...

I have owned this camera for approximently 3 years. For personal use this camera suited my needs, but when I try to take it to the next level the picture quality isn't there. Time and time again I struggle with taking sharp, crisp photo's which had eliminated them from many competitions.
Pros: Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, Heavy/Bulky
I would recommend this to a friend!
