Slow/poor auto focus
on May 5, 2010
Posted by: SportsAction
Overall not real satisfied with the Canon experience. My EOS 50D is my 2nd EOS from Canon. I use this camera with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens to shoot sports action photos. My first complaint is that the auto focus is slow when adjusting to moving subjects, even when in the Sports Mode or shooting with Predictive AI Servo AF. Just not real happy with the crispness/clarity of the shots. Don’t get me wrong, I do get some really great shots, but I lose too many because of poor focus. My second issue is the quality of the products. The body is about 5-6 months old and the lens is about 10. The lens has been is for repair twice for the same issue (loose mount) and the body once for a focus problem. It’s great that all 3 times Canon fixed for free since they are under warranty, but I’m really disappointed I had to send them in at all.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor build quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is my first dSLR, and it is my upgrade from Canon PowerShot G10. I have used this camera for about one and a half year, and I have had a good user experiences with this machine.
Here are the list of features that I love:
1) Magnesium alloy body - better for a hash environment
2) High frame rate (6.9 fps)
3) Micro-adjustment - No need to send in your 3rd lenses for calibration
4) Main control dial
5) Quick Access dial
6) Joy stick
7) Software that allows user to switch functionality between buttons
8) CF card interface
Thing that I wish it has:
1) Built-in wireless flash control
2) Swiveling LCD
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought a Canon 50d with 18-200mm lens a few months ago and I could not be happier with it! It works beautifully, the lens is great, the image quality is incredible, and I have experienced no problems. I love this camera and recommend it to everyone. Thank you Canon, I am definitely a customer for life.

Happy but not!

Purchased this camera, was expecting the upgrade to be worth the money, but it's not.
This camera has issues with dust, even the self cleaning doesnt really work at F16 or above.
This camera doesnt travel well at all.
Shutter been replaced twice, ( so much for the 100K clicks)I will not do it again.
Image size is wonderful never had a complaint on the quaility of the images, matches perfectly with the 24-70 2.8 L and the 70-200 2.8 L lenses.
other canon cameras
40D times 2
20D times 2
Rebal XT times 2
Pro work only.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor build quality, noisy, shutter life

Major mistake

This camera was preordered in 2008. It was one of the first ones shipped. It's been in for repair twice since I got it! Auto focus keeps going out, the light meter keeps going bad, and the pictures are noisey in just about any light! It just came back from the shop and the auto focus still doesn't work. I actually got BLACK pictures today while shooting in the midday Florida sun!! While it was in the shop, a friend loaned me a 40D. I got much better pictures out of the 40D!! It's very sad when my daughter who uses an Xs, gets much better pictures than I can with a 50D....
Pros: Nice features/settings, Superior build quality
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Avoid this one!

Trust me, you don't want to buy this, and I have a strong feeling the 7d is along the same lines. I don't really care about the technology used on the camera with microlenses, and the extra megapixels.. whatever it is, its not working.
- Noise, and lots of it. starting at ISO 400. Ridiculous. Up in the 1600 to 3200 you will notice green/pink bands across the image ( hard to see, but they do exist) even after the 1.0.7 update.
- Low light performance feels a lot lower than my Canon Xsi. Just going by prior use, haven't actually measured it.
- AWB doesn't work as well as the canon xsi, excess yellowish coloring under tungsten lighting. Don't know if i'm doing something wrong here, but that's what i've noticed so far. Seriously, make sure you try it out before you buy it.
- Sells with a 28-135mm in the kit, not wide enough for landscapes, which works out to what, 45mm at the wide end? with the 1.6x crop factor. The lens is good however.
- hate the power switch, weird position, prefer the design of canon xsi.
- i think it doesn't have the infrared for remote shutter? I could be wrong.
Seriously, I can live with everything else, but the noise. On the plus side, yes, fast shutter, heavy duty construction, bit more stable for fast/telescopic photography cos of the extra weight. 15mp does allow a lot more 'crop'ability. I've read reviews where people have suggested over exposing pictures slightly to avoid the noise, but that's hard for night time and indoor event photography.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, Short battery life
