Great Camera

After years of 35mm SLR experience (still have my F-1) and a few years of escalation through the digital experience I finally bought the 50d. I couldn't be happier. It's a fine piece of equipment. Once you embrace the concepts unique to digital, i.e white balance, RAW v JPEG, etc the results are phenomenal. If you are willing to dedicate the time and effort to learning a new skill and accept the time and failures that will occur along the way then I encourage you to make the leap to this fine machine.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life
Cons: should include eyepiece extension as standard

Solid camera for the advanced user

I started with the 20D, upgraded to the 40D and then the 50D.
Slipping into the 50D was easy after using the prior Canon cameras listed above.
I enjoy the 15MP resolution and the 6.4 FPS, as I normally use the camera to shoot at air shows. The quick shutter action and the 1.6 focal length make this a great body to use with either a 70~200 or better yet with the 100~400 Canon lens. It really helps bring the fast jets in close and clear.
I'm still not 100% happy with the noise level in low lite when not using a flash. I still find myself going to post processing, which normally takes the noise out of the equation without degrading the photo in most cases.
Would I recommend this camera to friends? You betcha'!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: noisy

My First SLR

What a great camera! This is my first EOS dSLR camera and I am impressed. The controls are simple to figure out and the screens are easy to read. The best part of the camera, other than the image quality, of course, is the solidity of the body. When you pick it up, it feels natural in your hands and well built - that's inspiration. The high speed shutter mode (continuous burst) is thrilling. The first time I tried it, I was blown away by the speed at which it captures multiple photos (in the right light - bright enough that is). Also, the "sleep" mode is great because it saves battery life but still makes the camera accessible in seconds; all you have to do is half-press the shutter and the camera is back in action.
I would highly recommend this model to any beginning photographer interested in taking their hobby to the next level.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Great Equipment!

I am delighted with my new Canon 50D body. I use it with a 24-105 IS L lens and a 100-400 IS L lens. I do a good deal of available light meeting photography, aviation photography and law enforcement work. It is excellent with much better noise reduction at high ISO than my 20D, although the maximum 12,500 is very noisy. Even in darkened rooms during a presentation I get great pictures without disturbing the audience with flash.
Although I do not often use the live view, it is very useful in some situations. The resolution is excellent. It is all I could ask for.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: photoshop cs-2 cannot read the cr2 files directly.

Learn the cameras settings
on December 24, 2010

I will have had this camera a year in January. I have been shooting for over forty years. I use mostly a 150mm macro in one to one and a MP-E65 in the five to one range. I have read with fascination the reviews that say the IQ of this camera is poor. Learn the settings! If you were not shooting 100 shots a day the first week learning how to set it up you have no one to blame but yourself, this is not an entry level camera. The images in the extreme macro shots that I take are constantly sharp, and I hand hold at 5 to 1. Work on your form, set the camera up properly and do the basic PP work, and you will find that your IQ troubles will vanish.
Oh, and shoot in RAW if you are serious about your shots.
And stop trying to compare the 50D to the 5DMKII. These are completely different levels of cameras. Semi pro vs pro, of course the 5DMKII gives a better picture, at a thousand green backs higher in price.
The 50D is a good solid semi pro that has served me well for a year, and has produced pictures that have been published, and with the release of the 7D the price has dropped a bunch.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, very good image quality, it's a canon

Almost magical....

I bought my 50D about a month after its first release in Nov 2008. I have been in love with this camera ever since. I have taken it on many trips with me as well as done specific photo shoots using studio flash units. All have yielded stunning results. Many are publication worthy and wow people regularly. I never use any of the full auto zones, always in at least P mode, if not using Manual to get the shot right. This camera does, at times, tend to meter to the brighter exposure especially at dusk or dimming light. Sometimes its welcome, sometimes not. It requires you to become familiar with it, and then spectacular results follow. Also, always shoot in RAW to get the full benefit from DPP included from Canon. Disappointed greatly that this camera did not get video at release as the 5D Mk II did just a month after this camera was released and was followed by the lower end T1i a couple months later which did get video using the same 15 MP sensor! However, my 50D now does 1080 30fps video thanks to the Magic Lantern project I discovered recently. Amazing what these cameras are capable of!
Pros: beautiful color reproduction, image quality, overall camera handling (body design), professional grade features at excellent price pt, bright & sharp lcd screen, intuitive controls
Cons: no video capture (from canon anyway), battery life when lcd actively used, cannot set max iso to be used in auto mode

Excellent Camera

I have used the 50D for about 2 months, and have made about 1000 images. I hae been very pleased with this camera.
The autofocus is quick and accurate. This is important to me because I like to photograph birds, and many times they are moving quickly and even erratically. The back LCD is bright and easier to see than those of my other Canon cameras (20D and 40D).
The Print/Share button, which I never used and whose function couldn't be changed on the 40D now can be used to activate Live View, which I find useful for macros and landscapes.
Image quality is very good for the size prints I make (16 x 20).
The manual could be improved. For example, the 50D has two custom settings in addition to the usual P, Tv, Av, M, and A-DEP. Each of these can be used to have customized settings. I have one set for Live View settings. However, I have not been able to figure out how to avoid setting the aperture, for example, in the Custom button. So it continues to revert to whatever it was when I created the settings for that Mode. I guess I'd better consult with the support folks and learn how to do that.
To keep this review brief, let me say that I like everything about my 50D camera with two reservations. One, I wish its weather proofing were up to the standards of the pro models. I am a nature photographer and it rains and snows. Two, I wish Auto Exposure Bracketing would allow 3 stops instead of just 2 stops plus and minus. The addition would improve HDR range. On the other hand, the Function Button (not present on the 40D) can be programmed to instantly give AEB, which is very convenient.
In summary, a very good camera, I am very pleased with it, and would recommend it to anyone at my level of photography.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, good battery life
Cons: Missing features/settings
