Expected more from Canon

The camera is an "OK" performer.
Pros:
- 15 megapixel images provide nice resolution/detail. - Controls are relatively simple to use (but could be further improved). - Colors are generally good, and bright reds are handled OK w/o much bleed. - Excellent selection of lenses, although I could ask for a few more wide angle "S" lens choices, e.g., fish eye and a fast 10 mm would be nice. - Custom function settigs C1 and C2 on the dial are great, much appreciated, and often used. If Canon can fit a C3 on the dial, that would further accomodate my shooting needs. Congratulations on this innovative custom feature Canon. - Battery life with the rechargeable is generally good. The battery charges fairly quick (a couple of hours). The recharging unit is compact and not much larger than the battery. The camera is heavy enough w/o the add-on battery pack, and the rechargable battery is relativly compact and affordable. so I would recommend just pocketing an extra battery or two. - 6 fps is adequate for most action, although not fast enough to capture paddle recovery stroke in a kayak race. - LCD is bright, but would much prefer to view images through the viewfinder.
CONS: - Could really use an articulated viewfinder. A competing brand has this feature, and I really miss it on the Canon. It makes shooting low or high shots so much easier/possible. - I would much prefer to view the playback images, as well as live images directly through the viewfinder instead of via the LCD. At my age, I need reading glasses, and it is incredibly inconvenient to compose a shot through the viewfinder, then have to pull the camera away from my face, don my glasses, then manipulate the button and look into the viewfinder every time I wish to see if I got the shot I wanted. A competing camera brand offers viewing an electronic image directly though the viewfinder. This was fantastic because it allowed me to see the image the camera sees, i.e., I was immediately able to spot if the white balance was off a bit, or whether the exposure needed some fine tuning, before I even took the picture. Then after I snapped the shutter, I could tell the camera to immediately look through the lens...or display the image I just shot for 1-3 seconds in the viewfinder. This was also fantastic, because I was able to tell whether or not I was happy with the image I just captured, without having to move my eye from the viewfinder or don my glasses and fumble with review buttons. A convenience and a real time-saver. - HD movie mode would be nice on the 50D, since you've got it on both upper and lower end models, but omitted it on the 40D and 50D for some reason. - I much prefer a strap that would fit around my wrist, instead of the neck strap which I rarely use. If I'm going to carry the camera for any length of time, I prefer to place it in a padded, water resistant camera fanny pack behind me. - The on/off switch is poorly placed. I'd much prefer to have a switch near the shutter release that I could slide on and off with my trigger finger, for faster and more convenient start-up and shut down. - Price seems OK with respect to other Canon products, but a bit pricey with respect to some other competitors, especially as lens quality is not always top notch. - Although I have not had problems in the past with water damage, providing a body that is fairly resistant to water/the elements, is always a plus. I am impressed tha some low end pocket cameras are water resistant down to 33 feet, freeze-proof, and shock resistant from a drop of 6 feet. WOW! If only this could be done with SLR's.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, two custom fcn settings on dial, nice selection of lenses
Cons: Missing features/settings, lacks articulated lcd, lacks ttl image viewing/playback, lacks hd movie mode, lacks wrist strap

50D rocks!

after 3 weeks of extensive use i have yet to find a flaw with the 50D. coming from a 40D i found the new features, especially the lcd-micro adjust ( and ability to crop with with cleaner results due to the extra mpixel), worth the expense. i don't shot at high iso , 3200, so i can't comment on the noise level at those settings but iso 100-1600 give excellent results. with the canon 70-200 4.0, 10-22 and the 17-55 2.8is, the camera produces awesome results! even my tamron lens produce better on the 50D. i love my 50D!!
only con i have is that camera is not weathe rsealed as much as i would lije.

Noisy, poor image quality camera!!!

This camera is a stop gap camera. The 40D is a much better deal. More mega pixels are not the answer. It should have had a better AF system in place. In AI Sevor I find that it step focuses, not very accurate much of the time. Buy the 40D instead.
Pros: Superior build quality, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy

Nothing Special

To me it's a repackaged 40D, plain and simple. It has a few feature upgrades but all in all I don't think it's any better than the 40D. Many may think that more megapixels are better but not always and in this case it isn't.
AF speed and AF points are the same as the 40D, good but no difference. The limitations of the 40D AF have been continued in the 50D.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Quick Start-up time, easy to use

Great digital but missing something

Great Camera !!! I would recommend it to everyone!!! the only thing it is missing is to stream real time into a PC while in a manual or automatic mode and view the shot on screen for editing especally in the HDMI connection..... IT will preform the Real Time Streaming But it requires additional attachments (ie) the Wireless Ethernet Adaptor. It should also do it through the HDMI Port!!!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, streaming real time

I just wished to Canon that I show the panoramic photo of the Grand Canyon taken 5 frames to make a panoramic photo without using a tripod. It is very sharp much better then my 20d eos I've still have. I had a little trouble at times to get the magental photos right. Other then that it is a perfect camera. Since I've upgraded the firmware, it is nearly perfect.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life

Disappointed

I was so excited to be upgrading from a 20D. Unfortunately I am not impressed with my new 50D. I am not getting sharp images with this camera. I have tried various settings and am not getting good results. I was told by the retailer where I purchased this camera that it would be great for sports pictures and that with the newer technology (versus my old 20D) the higher ISO would work well in gymnasium lighting. Again, I thought this was less than acceptable. Considering the poor white balance along with the poor quality at the higher ISO on the 50D, I believe my old 20D is taking better photos. The battery on this new camera doesn't seem to hold a charge for long either. The last issue I have is the auto focus tends to "seek" at times which tends to result in lost shots. Now I know that I will not be getting professional sports shots with this camera, but I have 5 boys that are involved in various activities. All I want is to capture some decent photos to remember these moments. I have saved a long time for this purchase and feel that it was a significant amount of money to spend on something that I am not able to use.
