Why no USB battery charger ?

I have put off writing this review until I found something that I can complain about. I the camera in October of 08 and have shot about 5000 pictures since then. I have also purchased the 17-40 L zoom, a 100-400 L. zoom and just recently the 100mm L stabilized macro lens. I would not have bought all that expensive glass if I didn't like the camera. I am thrilled by the end product. I love it; it's a great camera at a good price. I don't think I need to repeat all of the superlatives of the camera, there are many and they have been enumerated in other reviews, as are the few flaws. But what was a minor irritation has become a real aggravation. I cannot comprehend why the camera does not charge the battery while connected via USB to a computer. In fact the computer sucks power from the camera at a dizzying rate while connected. This has cost me a huge waste of time when a multi-hundred photo download died half way through, and I had to manually go through and delete the already downloaded files (DPP isn't perfect either). Yes, I know I could download directly from the CD card, but it is slower and a lot less convenient to do so. Now I have misplaced my charger, which are probably at the last B&B we stayed at, tucked away in an obscure outlet. My previous camera was a Canon G2, which uses exactly the same BP-511 battery as the 50D. When it was plugged into the computer with the same cable it CHARGED the battery. I have a spare battery that could always be charged overnight and there was not an extra, small piece of equipment to worry about when packing during a road trip. The battery is 7.4 V while the USB supply is 5.0 V. DC to DC converter/chargers are cheap, compact and efficient. The G2 demonstrates that. So why do they integrate the feature into a P&S and not in the DSLRs? There is absolutely no engineering (I am one) reason not to, so it must be a marketing decision. This camera is certainly not alone with this flaw; in fact I believe it is more the rule than the exception for high-end cameras. I am honestly baffled...
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, no usb charging function

Good Reason to Stay With A Canon
on May 7, 2009

I have been using Canon products for photography and film for decades now. When I first purchased my Canon Rebel 35mm, I thought it was the end all be all to cameras. Then I purchased the Canon EOS 50D. It is an amazing camera with so many features and options that I am still learning with it going on 6 months. It is an amazing camera. The Rebel and the 50D instilled so much confidence of Canon products in me that when I went to purchase a film camera, I chose the Canon XL2. What another amazing camera! Canon was so smart, that they made their EFF lenses compatible with their new SLR digital cameras. Canon is definitely way ahead of the curve when considering their consumers as they design newer and more advanced products. To put it simply.... IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CANON.... YOU DON'T HAVE A CAMERA!!!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, eff lenses are compatible, can be used as soon as the battery is charged.

Problems with the 50D
on March 26, 2009

Although I really love this camera, I have found a problem with the main dial. It has gotten stuck on a particular ISO and would not change. Then as suddenly as that happened, it went away. Now I've found that I can't get it back to ISO 100 after using the highlight tone priority. As I'm a professional photographer, this problem is quite serious to me.

Good But 7D is Better
on March 5, 2010

I purchased this camera last spring. It was my first digital camera (previously shot pro slide film). Canon digital color is amazing, the 3" LCD is awesome and the high speed frame rate is good (with a 45 MB/sec card. However, the camera has two significant limitations: (1) The AF has nowhere near the number of cross sensors needed for tracking moving subjects and (2) There is no HD video. If the 7D had been available last spring, I would have purchased it instead of the 50D. Now I have to spend more $$$s to upgrade to get what the 50D should have been in the first place with the improved AF, metering and HD video of the 7D. I still gave it an overall 4 stars because the price is lower than the more feature-rich 7D.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Missing features/settings, 9-point af inadequate for moving subjects
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
