Dissappointment Has Set In

There are many great features of the 50D. It's AF especially in Al Servo is superior. The LCD is great. However, I am very disappointed with the noise, especially in low light situations and with darker backgrounds. I tested it from ISO 400-3200 from no noise reduction to the nighest noise reduction possible and was unhappy with the results. This is my third 50D and they all seem to have the same issues with noise reduction.
For birds in flight, this body cannot be beat. However, I find myself relying on my 40D for other photography which defeats the purpose of the new camera body.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

You can't beat the quality with the price of this camera. I only have one wish that the viewing screen can be swiveled or at least tilted up/down.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation
Cons: Short battery life

Keep you 40D!

This camera replaced my 40D. Not that impressed. Generated more chroma noise than the 40D.
The on/off switch is still a pain. Continuously switches to mid position when hanging from my neck. This disables the thumbwheel control. I love the improved LCD. Now you can truly focus with the LCD in Live View mode. Canon still needs alot of post-treatent to get a decent pick that rivals Nikon's.
If you want my opinion, get the 40D for better picks and save some bucks. If the quality of LCD & LiveView is important go with the 50D.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Quick Start-up time, good battery life
Cons: noisy high isos, chroma noise
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Best Purchase so far

I have been looking for a good digital camera for some time and sought the advice of a family member who is a pro and he loves Canon's quality, performance, and speed. He thinks Canon's sensors are the best as well as their lenses. I only wish it had Full HD video capability. I'm shooting with an 18-55mm IS lens but someday hope to be able to afford the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM but as a missionary that is out of my price range.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky
I would recommend this to a friend!

I am extremely happy with my new 50D. I used 20D for 4 years, but my daughter just had to have it, so I finally upgraded to 50D. Great features and image quality, large screen, easy set-up. Automatic sensor cleaning is a fantastic addition!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: none

This is a great camera for anything. The lens that already comes with it is great. Great quality, awesome camera. Not a horrible price for a 15.1 MP camera. I would reccomend this to anyone who loves photography. I have had mine for almost a year now, and i love it!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Stay away from this camera

While the 50D has the same overall build quality of the 40D and several nice features over the 40D, I would not recommend this camera.
IMO Canon has pushed this camera out the door too fast and pushed the pixel density too far. The camera has inconsistent results at Low ISO with 80% or more being too noise, I would compare the 50D at ISO 100 to the 40D at ISO800 when shooting in raw.
The extra MegaPixels are not necessary for this grade of camera and Canon should have just stuck with the other upgrades and used the same sensor as the 40D OR decreased the pixel density on the new sensor and given the 50D a moderate MP boost.
Save your money and go for the 40D, plain and simple.
The 50D has only been out for a couple of months and already many people are selling their 50D and moving back to the 40D.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: Poor image quality, Shaky operation, poor low iso image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
