Excellent Mid-Range dSLR

This camera has given me some of the best quality images I've ever taken. A big thing to remember is that the quality of the lens will affect your images. The potential is limitless if you have the right lens...and you don't have to buy "L" to get good IQ. The 50mm 1.8 will give you some beautiful shots with this camera. The build quality if solid. The camera is a bit heavy, but that gives me a sense of security knowing it's built rock solid. The features and manus are well laid out and easy to use and the important buttons are at your fingertips, making it easy to adjust your settings on the fly.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy, Slow Start-up time
I would recommend this to a friend!

Just too much noise
on May 1, 2009

The specs on the 50D look good, but after using it for a while now, it has been a total disappointment. The problem is noise. The 50D does not compare favorably to other cameras in its class or to its predecessors (like the 40D). The recent firmware release (version 1.0.6) seemed to help with a really severe vertical banding problem in low light situations. Until I bought the 50D I would not have imagined Canon making a camera with banding problems. My 40D outperforms the 50D at virtually all speeds and it is significantly better with noise at ISO ratings above 400. And my 30D out performs the 50D at ISO 800 and 1000 for noise (and yes, I recognize there is a big difference in pixel density,etc.). Unless you really have to have the 15megapixels I strongly suggest you buy the 40D. I also suspect the problems with the 50D are why the 40D is still being made and sold. I truly love Canon products, but the 50D just isn't worthy of the brand.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Nothing wrong

I don't know where all these people with low reviews are coming from. You get what you pay for. I upgraded to a 50d from a 40d and think it was worth the price. I am very satisfied with this camera. I have had no problem with my battery life infact I am always surprised how long it lasts. I do not use live view very often but who does.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Solid Operation
Cons: wish it had video

mild disappointment

the pictures from my 50D look just like the pictures from my 40D. bigger files, same quality. i was expecting higher resolution and finer detail. i did not get that. i use the EFS 17 55 2.8 IS which is a good lens. the image quality is no better than the 40D.
canon has put way too many features on the camera.i spent half a day disabling all the auto features. canon seems intent on making this as a P&S camera. as a skilled photographer i do not want all the bells and whistles.
i want greater dynamic range. much greater. i want higher image quality. i want low noise at high ISO.
Pros: solid camera
Cons: too many junk features

CANON EOS 50D

I HAVE RECENTLY OWNED THESE CANON PRODUCTS, CANON S5-IS 8.2, CANON 450D 12.2 AND NOW THE CANON 50D 15.1 AND CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. I MOSTLY SHOOT MACRO AND SCENARY USING 3 LENSES. CANON 17-85MM, CANON 100MM MACRO, CANON 70-300MM TELE AND THIS CAMER SHOOTS SO QUICK.
MISSING A SHOT IS NOT THIS CAMERA FAULT IT SO QUICK YOU CAN'T MISS ANYTHING.
THE PHOTOS ARE SO VIVID AND YOU CAN ADJUST THE AMOUNTS OF CONTRAST, SHARPNESS AND MORE ON EACH SHOT.
I LOVE THIS CAMERA TO THE END.

Met my expectations

Love the build and quality. Not disappointed at all. Im quite happy with the AF performance, the IQ and speed. My only con is the weight, but I'm used to it, as I own the XXD line of cameras from the 30D>40D>50D plus a 7D and a Rebel XT.
Overall, I am very happy with the camera.
Pros: excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Excellent Camera For the Price
on July 22, 2010

Had this camera for over a year and it has rewarded me with a lot of excellent photos worthy to keep. Some of the endearing features of this camera to me are:
- Good grip and looks substantial despite my big hands
- Menu arrangement is logical and easy to navigate
- Bright and clear LCD screen perfect for Live View
- Improved Autofocus features
- Lots of customization options
- Will give you good photos even when set to "full auto" mode and used as a point and shoot.
Pros: good color resolution, durable metal body, high pixel count, can use both ef & efs lenses
Cons: no video but not really that important, changes models very quickly- forced obsolescense
I would recommend this to a friend!
