I have had my 50D for over a year and have taken about 15k photos. I use it for wildlife photos so its always used outside. I have yet to have any situation that this camera didn't handle. It takes very nice pictures and allows me a wide range of settings that cover any situation. I bought this as an upgrade from the Powershot G9 I had previously and was blown away by the difference in the image quality.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation
Cons: price

Should have considered the proven 40D

I upgraded to the 50D from the Rebel XTi. I realize now more than ever how great that camera really was. But I wanted more of a feature set, better image quality (Digic IV vs Digic II) and a more solid handling body. I did extensive research on this from all over the net. The one thing that the majority of the pros and enthusiasts seemed to note was concerns about the noise. After three months of ownership I have to agree. This camera does not handle image quality and the megapixel count the way the 40D does or even the XTi. Canon, if you want to boast a 15 megapixel DSLR thats great but, you have to make it handle noise better than the previous model at 10 megapixel. In my opinion it does not and I have done a lot of comparisons. The sad thing is this product is so good at everything else, build quality, feature set, ergonomics, that it kills me to have to be disappointed in the one thing that truly matters, IMAGE QUALITY. For those that are wondering what I am putting on the body, it's the 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, so don't bother noting that it's a shortcoming from the lens. I would still recommend this product to those who do minimal shooting in less lit environments as it IS still very good in better lit or flash environments. But those not needing the big beautiful 3" VGA screen should consider the value and quality of the 40D. I wish I did.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good image quality
Cons: noisy

I use it to photograph college basketball and autocross events. Very good in low light for fast action photography. I notice that when I have the camera with an Canon L lens other photographers notice and admire it. I've never had that happen before. Highly recommend camera for fast action photos. I've got more keeper photos with the 50D.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, good battery life, sharp photos

Excellent Camera/Value

Excellent camera. I've owned a number of the Canon DSLR models ever since the Rebel came out. I was happy with them, but wanted something more.
The 50D was what I was looking for - a bit pricey, but the quality of the pictures, the ease of setup, and flexibility for different venues - outdoors, indoors, weddings, nature photography, and even home improvement before/after.
The weight/feel of the camera is very nicely different than the lower end models. It feels solid in your hands, and even without IS lens, you can comfrotably take pictures in low light.
Some of the settings take a bit of getting used to (like navigating menus and options with the wheel on the back and the front).
All in all, a great buy if you're looking for a step up from the earlier models.
Pros: quality, look-n-feel, features, weight
Cons: controls can be complex at times, little pricey

A Real Nice Step Up From 30D

I have owned the D30, 30D and now the 50D and really am pleased with the 50D. The settings in view finder are easier to see and I like seeing the iso. The LCD display is bright and clear, the controls (Quick Control, Multi-Controller, the setting buttons) all act similar enough to the 30D that learning curve is proving to be short. I really enjoy the Live View for my stills, landscapes and architecture shots, especially the zoom manual focus for needle sharp focusing. (Live View does seem to really eat battery power). The 6 fps speed is wonderful, but the improved performance at high iso (1600 and 3200) is one of the biggest plus features for me. The 50D way out performs my 30D there. Picture quality seems great and the flexibilty to shoot different size raw files comes in handy when shooting sports or action shots where I take a lot of frames, this option saves CF Card space. The new menu structure seems easier and I seem to be using the Multi Controller button more effectively. Very nice indeed.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good high iso performance
Cons: low battery life on live view

Great Camera

This is a great camera!! The noise claims are bogus!! When it comes to noise this camera performs as good if not better than the 40d. I suspect the people having problems arent using DPP or are using a beta version of ACR. Most of the features have a purpose. Auto focus is fast and accurate! Its simply a joy to use! Battery life could be better. I noticed that jpegs take a little tweeking to get them right. It seems the camera is applying a considerable amount of noise reduction....even at low ISO settings. I shoot raw so this doesnt really affect me! The build quality is second to none!! Image quality is stellar!! Eat your heart out Nikon!!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Short battery life

As a retired computer dinosaur, I decided to return to a hobby I had as a teen. My biggest apprehension was the computerized digital age of photography. So far I have been very pleased with the instructions in the owner's manual, as supplemented by an after market book on the 50D and a 12 hour course at our community college. The 50D is proving to be fairly straight forward as I take small steps. It will be a snap for cmptr literate users. The camera produces outstanding results with the 28-135 kit lens and 70-200 2.8L. I purchased the camera primarily to shoot birds and wildlife as well as family use. The 6fps burst has proven very useful, as have the AV, TV and manual modes. I have taken 2500+ photos. The best have been amazing considering my inexperience. The substandard have all been due to poor technique. The large bright LCD is a big plus and provides instant feedback for corrections. My film SLR is Canon and I will definitly stay with Canon products.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD

Best camera I ever owned

There are not enough words in the English lanquage to describe this camera. Like the images coming from this new chip! Like the C/Fn extra functions to tweek the camera. The 50D has the highest resolution per square mm. of the entire Canon EOS line. This camera has 45455 pixels per square mm as compared to 24422 pixels for the 5D and the 1D mark III. How much better picture quality those cameras deliver, I do not know but the 50D picture quality is simply - outstanding -! This camera is a pleasure to own!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, what else is there to add?
Cons: do not have any
