What A Way To Restart A Hobby

I have had my 50D for almost a year and I love it. Battery life is great, went to shoot the Blue Angels and took almost 2700 photos that day (most in auto burst mode). Still had some battery life. Only hold back that day was lack of memory cards (had 6 - 500mb and 2 - 4 GB) and used them all. Since corrected with 16 GB card. I do not use LCD except for review. Camera is rugged, my Unit with kit lense fell from camera bag approx 2.5 feet. Broke UV filter but camera and lense not damaged. I now shoot only in raw mode. Battery life with flash is much shorter but that is to be expected. I have since added Cannon 70-200 F4 IS USM lense and expect to add macro lense in near future.
Pros: excellent image quality, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, good battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Buy

I am somewhat of a "beginner" photographer, and have only been taking photos for about 3 years now. I do it for fun, but I have been using a Canon Rebel 35mm. This Canon 50D made all the difference in the world. It focuses right away, and produces great images. I took a picture of a waterfall and changed the shutter speed, and it looked like a photograph I could have only imagined seeing in a magazine. You can take a ton of photos on one battery life which is very convenient. This is definitely worth the purchase.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: none

I have owned many Canon's...T90, Rebel XT, and Rebel XSI. Replaced the Rebel XSI with the 50D. I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough gains to justify the cost...but I was wrong. The 50D is amazing. The autofocus is very accuracte...even in very low lighting. This was my main issue with the XSI. In addition, I have found the noise levels perfectly acceptable up to ISO 3200. At 6400, there is too much noise, although I haven't experimented yet with the maximum noise reduction feature at high ISO's...I have just used to Standard option. I have used this to shoot low light stage shows and the results are beautiful. I currently have the 18-85 and 70-300 lenses. I was amazed...but I felt as if I had bought new lenses....the camera made that much of a difference. I would highly recommend this camera.
It was a little tricky to get used to controlling the various functions by either the jog wheel on the back or the wheel on the top....I sometimes still forget which one controls which function. This is certainly not a big deal...just a learning curve.

Love This Camera!

Ive had my 50D for several months now, affording the opportunity to shoot in varying conditions. I am amazed at this camera's metering ability compared to earlier DSLR's. I primarily shoot with a Canon AF 28-135 mm image stabilization lens that has the nice added functionality of having macro availability. For aerial shots, IS is turned off to save battery power, for the airplane would keep the IS constantly trying to compensate.
I've found the AF points to be right on, and although I'm not a big fan of the pop-up flash, it is easily turned off or on in a pinch.
The 3" LCD screen is very nice, and the user can set how long they wish the screen to come on after a shot, if at all.
This camera has done amazingly well with battery use.
The camera feels solid, fits nicely in my hands and produces excellent images.
My camera is used for business as well as personal use. In our business, Canon cameras have proved to be reliable and long-lasting. Take time to read your manual when you first get your camera. It will show you how to save time, for each model is a bit different.
I would definitely recommend the 50D. We also just purchased the EOS 1ds Mark III, which is a little larger, has a few more features; an excellent camera to be sure, but is almost too heavy for me to carry around for hours..
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, excellent metering, easy to scroll through photos, nice white balance
Cons: shutter a tad noisy definitely not a dealbreaker.

This is my first DSLR and frankly I am blown away by the performance. I have been using point and shoots for years and I am astounded by the difference in IQ. I cannot see how anyone could not shoot fantastic pics with this fine piece of equipment. Having owned it for a couple of months I am still learning its capabilities which are many. I love the resolution on the LCD and the fast FPS are great for wildlife but I must admit I bought the camera because it simply felt great in my hands. I purchased my 50D with the 18-200mm kit and I cannot wait till I can pick up some L series lenses. Buy it you will love it .

Great Upgrade from 20D

I bought this body as an upgrade from my older 20D. Its exceeded my expectations in every way except for one. The mode control dial on the 50D (Black letters on a silver background) is harder to read in dim light than the mode control dial on my older 20D (white letters on a black background). But other then that I love it. The pictures are clearer and sharper than before even with my old lenses. The color and exposures are also much better resulting in much less work to produce the final images.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: mode dial hard to read in dim light

It's real simple Canon has perfected their semi pro DSLR. I owned the 20D and 40D and now the 50D brings me the best of the best. As for comments on too many features, use what you need, ignore the rest. Live view is so much better then on my 40D, Tripod is still a must but that is expected. Brighter screen is a plus in my landscape work. As for battery life I don't see a difference, it is still quite good but I use a vertical grip w/ two batteries so maybe that's why I don't see a difference. Noise as higher ISO is negligible. I shot a very dark scene of Banyon Trees at 3200 on a tripod and made a perfect 11 by 17 print with no grain or noise. As a photographer from the days of pushing film with my Nikons I could never get the results that this camera delivers! Nothing on the market compares for quality/price!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, fast shooting, solid feel
