I am very satisfied with this camera as a semi-professional photographer. It has great features with programmable configuration keys. Image quality is excellent at most lighting conditions. Canon has really improved there high ISO noise filtering - but still is a bit behind the other whose name shall not be mentioned. Price is steep for the armature, but about right for those transitioning into pro photography. This is my Fifth canon camera and is a great choice for the next step prior to the Mark series.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, good battery life

I upgraded from the Rebel and what a difference. The quality of the photographs and the camera are beyond words. You will just have to try it for yourself. The camera is easy to use. Add an image stabilizer lens and you're all set.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: none

Great Camera

I have owned this camera for over 3 months now and am amazed at the picture quality. On full auto it takes great photos. I am using the highest resolution and taking in both RAW and Jpeg format. I am venturing into the manual modes and higly reccommend that you use the user manual or , as I did, buy a DVD instructional guide. It is far easier to watch someone show you how to use the camera, as there are some very complicated menu items you can choose to use.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Very Nice

After having the D60, 10D, 30D and now the 50D, this is a step above the rest. Controls are easy to use once you get over the minimal learning curve. The file sizes, opens and saves as a tiff at nearly 45mb right out of the camera are nice for what i use them for. I was able to test my lenses with the micro-adjust and no corrections were needed, which was nice. When using Live View, when zoomed in, there tends to be vibration shake, even on a tripod, which to some extent is to be expected. The battery life isn't as long as it used to be on the older models and can easily be exhausted by 1 extensive shoot (where as my old cameras may last a few different shoots), but higher processor, larger files, and intermittent Live View usage, that's also somewhat understandable. There also is a single dead pixel upon arrival in the rear LCD. It's near the bottom so it isn't a big deal but debating on whether to send to canon for repair. Video would have set it apart from the competition, but what can you do? High ISO is nice, grainy in the expanded ISO's, but at least through 3200 and some 6400's are very usable. Still, with everything it is still far and above better than the previous models. Cant wait to get my 5D Mark II now!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Quick Start-up time, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, single dead pixel in rear lcd

Quality Product...competitive market

Overall, I am really enjoying the 50D. Very good IQ, rugged and durable body construction, versatile live view function with phase-based and contrast-based AF, and exception LCD resolution. Canon really has pushed megapixel envelope on APS-C sized sensors - whether that is ultimately detrimental, however, is a user-specific perspective. Strong IQ matched with good ISO performance with minimal noise reduction intervention is certainly a challenge for any high megapixel sensor; per pixel detail must also be factored into the equation as well. In this regard, the 50D has done an admirable job, although there will be those who do rightly note a slight increase in noise relative to the 40D...this is, however, diminished when resizing the 50d's image to that of its 10.1 Mpx older sibling. Another factor is HD moving recording, or the lack thereof: With rival DSLR(s) offering of this facility (even if it is not a DSLRs primary function), and its introduction on Canon's exceptional new 5D Mk II, one must wonder why this too was not offered. Nevertheless, there will be very few who are disappointed with this excellent DSLR, from the serious amateur to the semi-pros out there.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, very good iq with pixel detail
Cons: Short battery life, iso>1600 noise per pixel level for cropped photos, no hd video facility (feature on competition)

Bought this camera a couple of weeks ago. I love it. A very nice piece of equipment. I shot a lot. I'm able to get what I need effortlessly. Picture quality is superb, even in low light.
As far a battery life, I shot tell the batteries were dead, which happened rather quickly at first. After recharging them, they are lasting as long or longer than those in my Canon 20D. (I use battery grips).
I personally like the weight and 'feel' of the camera. A very solid and rugged feel. I also like the added weather seals designed to keep out moister.
The only drawback that I've found with this camera is the focusing in low light. Not up to par (in my opion) for a camera of this class. Other wise I'm very pleased. This is one of those time where I know I made a wise purchase.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: noisy

I have gone from the 20 to the 30 and now I love the 50d. Have taken it on some major shoots i.e. New Mexico and England and it never let me down. I love the live view feature, but haven't used it much; nice to have it available.
My main lens is the 24-105L and I must say this would make any body great.
I had a problem with the unit getting any power and when i called Canon found out the the problem was the power grip. Cleaned the contacts and it up and running again.
One of these days I will move up to the 5d Mark 11. However I have no need for the movie feature.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, Short battery life
