What More Could I Want!

I don't believe that I'll ever need a camera with more capability and performance than the 50d. I rated it only 4 for features because it does not have video which some (but not I) would see as a deficiency. I use the 50d largely on vacation trips. I try to go to scenic places and I want the best pictures I can afford. The 50d serves this purpose admirably. It's a bit heavy. I like that because it enables me to hold it more steady. Light cameras seem to wander all around in my hands. It's also large. Once again, that fits my hands. I use a monopod a great deal and, with the 50d mounted, I can wrap myself around the camera and monopod very comfortably and minimize shake. The LCD monitor is even better than I thought it would be. However, in high temperatures (such as in a recent trip through the Panama Canal), the sweat on my nose smeared it up a bit. This is a minor distraction and doesn't prevent a clear view of the picture. It just requires periodic cleaning. The biggest gripe I have about the camera, which should indicate how little I can find wrong with it, is the position of the off/on switch. I keep reaching with my index finger for the switch where it is on my Digital Rebel. But I often have to take the 50d away from my face to turn it on. Not good. The 50d produces beautiful images. I took a dramatic sunset off the coast of Colombia (with a Canon 17-40mm L lens) and the reds and yellows jump out at you. I take very few low-light pictures but I did try a few at the entrance to the Panama Canal at ISO 800 and considerably before the sun came up. I was absolutely amazed at how nicely they came out. This has encouraged me to do a lot more of this. I think that that's one of the side benefits of the 50d. It does so many things so well that it encourages you to become a better photographer. What more could anyone want?
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, size and weight suit me
Cons: Complicated controls/menu
I would recommend this to a friend!

Upgrading from 30d to 50d, excellent color accuracy, very fast, beautiful display and lots of functions for tweaking, pictures are very sharp and has less noise than 30d.

Great body that allows you to spend more on lenses

The 50D is the perfect "happy medium" between the venerable Rebel line and the pro-caliber 5D and 1D bodies. The menus are straight-forward and the controls are well marked and intuitive. This is a body that you can set to full-auto should a camera novice in the family want to use it, while still allowing the full control of all the variables that an expert photographer demands.
My only gripe is the small sensor, but it certainly wouldn't stop me from buying another 50D or 7D for that matter.
In closing, if you only have a few grand to spend on a camera outfit, this is a wise buy that allows you to get more and/or higher quality lenses.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: no full size sensor

Best DSLR I have owned
on March 28, 2009

I started out in digital photography with a 1 megapixel point and shoot. I moved to DSLR when the Digital Rebel came out. I have had a 20D and a 40D before getting my EOS 50D. The increased resolution was the reason I got the 50D. My EOS 50D with a Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS lens is a hard combination to beat.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

A Great Upgrade from the 20D
on December 11, 2008

I currently have a 300D, 20D and now the 50D. I like the 20D for many reasons but my go to camera has always been the the 300D. I shoot a wide varity of subjects, ranging from nature to Mardigras Balls and Parades. I work as a freelance photograper in the New Orleans area. I recently used my new 50D on a shoot and it felt great. The imaqe quality was a noticeable improvement over the 20D. The menue was a lot easier to work with than either of the other cameas that I own. To say that I was impressed would be an understatement.

Amazing Detail

This summer I upgraded from an Eos Rebel XTi to the 50D. I am amazed at the quality and brilliance of the shots I am getting. Yes, it is heavier than the Rebel. But it is well balanced, so the added weight is not a problem. The screen, which I have covered with a sunshade, is also remarkable. It is really possible to see the results. Those results are even more than I had expected. I am totally satisfied.

No Regrets

This is my second DSLR and I really enjoy this purchase. I am blown away by the rocking performance. I started learning DSLR photography for about an year. Especially once I saw the pictures from this camera, I wanted to learn the photography to get 100% out of this camera features, amazing quality. My wife is using the DSLR first time and she feels very easy to take the picture with the standard functions, she loves the quality. Ofcourse she complaints the heaviness. I am using this for the fast two weeks, trying to learn the capabilities which are many. I love the resolution on the LCD and the fast FPS are great to capture my kids dances, sports and their each moment, particularly my little ones. Though it costs bit more, I never regret of this purchase. I am thinking to purchase the L series lens once I lget good hold on the camera features. I strongly recommend this product even for the starters (like me). It will rock, you love it .
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life
Cons: Heavy/Bulky
