Great camera

I have been using the 50D with the 28-135mm lens for about a month. I had purchased this camera to upgrade from a Canon AE1 that I had been using since 1982. I am mainly involved in Sports and Wildlife photography. I wanted a digital camera that would duplicate or surpass the images that I was used to with the 35mm format. I believe that the 50D does just that and more. With the shutter / ISO settings that are available with the 50D, the shot possibilities are endless. The 50D is somewhat heavier than the AE1, but I knew that going in, so that's not really a complaint. The 50D is a very well built, solid camera. My initial plan was to upgrade to a Rebel XT. When comparing the Rebel XT with the 50D, there is no comparison. Although the Rebel XT is also an awesome camera, I am glad to have spent the extra cash for the 50D.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: absolutely none

Blown Away

I am a rank amatuer in the digital camara world and hesitated for quite a while between purchasing the Rebel T1i and the 50D DSLR with a Canon EF-S 18-200 IS Lens. I finally purchased the 50D with not one regret. I was, and still am blown away with the possibilities and features of this camera. If I had one wish it would be a better and more explicit book of instructions. After purchasing the 50D I met a person who happened to be a retired photographer and reporter and his best advise to me was "just go out and shoot pictures" which is what I did and that learning curve is getting to be less of an effort. As a 79 year old timer I am determined to master this equipment and have fun doing it. You did a great job CANON.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life

Rugged, dependable

The Camera is solid and dependable. I am adicted to taking pictures with it. At first I was disappointed with picture quality. Then I made a micro-adjustment (see page 180 of manual) on my old EF lens and the camera came alive. I think however to get full use of the 15 megapixals I will have to invest in an L series lense.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use
Cons: needed to microadjust lens

I've had my Canon EOS 50D for about a week. Now I'm no pro, not by a long shot and I am taking pictures that are blowing away every one who sees them. Changing the settings is easy and I am learning to take great pictures just by playing with the infinite combinations. You won't be disappointed here.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, crisp clean pictures

Outstanding but takes some learning

When I first picked up the 50D I was delighted with the beautiful LCD - instant want! Upon receiving the camera, I went out and shot quite a few pictures. Looked great. Then I started using under different lighting, uses, and became very unhappy.
THis camera takes more learning than the 40D in my opinion. I actually use the custom functions on the 50D--never bothered with the 40D. Noise is definitely a factor here and I was unhappy until I realized I was causing the noise with my shooting techniques. The 50D requires you to actually use some skill.
Great camera - focusing is exceptional, much better than my 40D. Image quality is outstanding. Love the way the camera feels in my hand; slight but important difference.
LOVE the new LCD - for this alone I would keep this camera. Enjoy the added MPs to give me more cropping room. I have printed very large photos with satisfaction.
cons: more noise if you do not use proper techniques; this camera shows up faults in lower quality lens.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet
Cons: must use good lens to get best quality from 50d

Great Camera

I have been using my 50D since April, 2009. I had originally purchased the 50D to replace the AE1 that I had been using since 1983. I wanted a digital camera that would equal or surpass the 35mm in image quality. I can say that after 7 month of use, and approximately 1000+ images that I had made the right decision. This camera has performed wonderfully, and I am extremely happy with it. I was almost swayed by the so called "experts" that said that the 50D was going to be very "noisy" at the higher ISO levels. Yes, at 6400 or 12,800 ISO you get some "noise". But at 3200 ISO and below, the 50D is a stellar performer. I shoot mainly Sports (Baseball and Soccer), and Wildlife (daylight and low light). I have used L series and standard lenses with great results. I cannot think of one complaint for this camera. Anyone wishing to throw their 50D away, I'll take it. I would like a spare!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, great images, excellent feel

Best 1.6 Camera EVER!

Having owned the following:
30D
1D
5D
40D
50D
60D
Rebel XTi
Rebel XT
I believe I can offer some real insight into Canon cameras. I can say without a doubt this new 50D is the finest DSLR I've used. It is easier to set, the photos are nearly without any noise, and it is a FAST camera on top of it all.
I've owned my new 50D since October and have used it in all kinds of light, the photos are without question an improvement over my previous cameras.
I even use this over my 5D, especially in low light situations.
I would recommend this camera for any photographer looking for a professional result.
I LOVE this camera!!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, excellent in low light
Cons: only a 1.6 dslr
