A great backup camera
on February 14, 2009

from Baton Rouge, LA.
I own 3 Canon cameras, the Mark III, xTI and now the 50D. I was looking for another camera to act as a secondary camera, a backup camera to my Mark III for shooting sports. I bought the 50D because of the speed, 6.5 fps, but to get the High ISO capabilities, that was "the icing on the cake". This is a great camera, and very easy to use. Plus the price for "body only" was "a no brainer". I bought it, now it has become my everyday camera and the Mark III is only used for sports shooting because of its speed at 10fps. Best amatuer/prosumer camera out there at that price range. I believe you would have to pay at least another $1000 more to get a better camera with more features.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: at 15 megs you need at least a 8g card

Oustanding for outdoor sports shoots

I produce outdoor television programming and use my new 50D to shoot stills for advertisers. I have a 5D which is excellent, but the 50D is much faster and easier to use when shooting action shots on the water. What a great job Canon has done with this camera.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Quick Start-up time, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, live view function will not work with auto presets

This is a real 5 Star DSLR

I received my EOS 50D, about 4 weeks ago. It took 3 days to go through the manual. Since then I spend 1 hour everyday with it. What I've found out is that this camera exceeds every expectation that I had. I still own the EOS 7e, that I upgraded to the 50D from. I still love that camera, but even it can't compare to the 50D. The image quality, and the exposure latitude is exceptional. After only 4 weeks of ownership I still learn something new each time that I pick it up. Back lit subjects used to drive me crazy. Not anymore. Words can't describe just how happy I am. Good job Canon. You knocked it out of the park with this one. :o)
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, wide exposure latitude

Incredible Camera

I bought this about 6 months ago and I am absolutely pleased with it. Yes, you have to read the manual and practice the controls a little to get good with it, but once you start understanding how to use it, the pictures are incredible. I also enjoy how user friendly the camera is for taking photos in so many different situations. Personally, I like the solid feel of the body and appreciate the feeling the camera has when I am shooting. I used to shoot when I was younger and was happy the camera offered so many options to shoot immediately.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, user friendly

Disney prep

I've had my camera since Nov. 2010 and I can't say enough good things about it. My Christmas pictures were outstanding and the many pictures that I've taken of the 10 + feet of snow this winter are fabulous. I'm planning a trip to Disney World in June 2011, and can hardly wait to take tons of pictures in the four parks and Typhoon Lagoon. I'm now saving for the newst Canon camcorder!
I have always had Canon cameras, super 8 movie cameras and even a little printer that I purchased after Christmas. I LOVE this camera!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

50D - Sweet but study hands

All,
The 50D can produce very high quality shots.
I shoot weddings - main lenses: 24-70mm L and 85mm.
Thoughts:
The 50D is not as forgiving as a lower sized sensor - 40D thru 10D.
Meaning, i find a little more attention is required because the sensor has a higher density of photocells.
Diffraction: forget about it. some sites have been mentioning this but it is blown out of proportion.
I have shot at f/16 and enlarged to 18"x24" print.
Do give the camera at least a month to get use to it.
Very worthy camera - do not regret the move to purchase camera.
Micro adjust/LCD screen and Digit IV all trump 40D
Once you play w/ micro adjust - you do not want a body w/ out it. Really.
These are the high lights - no negatives for me.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life, micro-adjust

It's all the pre-release press claims it to be. Excellent image capture, intuitive, well placed controls, excellent LCD display. I believe this heralds the next generation of how we think about DSLR's.
Image quality is fantastic. And isn't that what photography is all about? The 15mpx sensor uses a newly designed lens that seems to truly be brighter with more definition than any I've seen. In lens stabilization is as good as it can get with todays technology giving an honest 3-4 stops advantage with the 18-200mm, 3.5-5.6 IS lens that came with the kit. I think this is the first time Canon has included a lens hood, extra battery and even a UV filter. Lens light fall-off is well corrected with what they call peripheral illumination correction. One less step for post processing. A full range of extended setting are available through a very intuitive menu. But, those we use most often are very well placed as external controls so removing your eye from viewfinder is seldom necessary. The 3", 920,000 pixel LCD is a work of art by itself. ISO speeds up to 12,800 allow shooting in otherwise impossible situations. While some noise is to be expected at this extreme, detail is preserved and noise is controlled better than in any other camera I've seen. After several hundred pictures I couldn't be happier. If you shoot for N.G. maybe you want something else but, considering the price/value, for the other 99% of us this is as good as it gets.
I paired this with the 580EX ii for an outdoor rainy wedding this last weekend and the camera results were flawless. This camera frees you to be your creative best as you no longer have to worry about your tools.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: heavier than my xti (obviously)., on/off switch not as convenient as xti.
