Decent but not excellent

I first bought a smaller Canon that I had to return because of the disappointing image quality. I decided to stay with Canon and I bought this camera for more money. Strong features of this camera: 1. Very nice full manual feature. 2. Good quality zoom. 3. Large, good quality screen. 4. First class warranty service. The camera did not function well out of the box. I sent it to the factoy for warranty service. They replaced the optical assembly and they did electrical work on it in ONE DAY! 5. Very portable size for all the features it packs, still pocket size. 6. Good night pictures in manual mode if you know what you do. 7. Solid software that works well with the Windows Photo Gallery. 8. Pretty sturdy construction. Weaknesses: 1. Terrible battery life. I use Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeables. They last between 50 and 100 pictures. 2. The color quality and contrast in auto and easy modes is dull. You have to use the software enhancements on the PC to edit the pictures and enhance the colors and contrast. 3. No automatic "Sports Events" feature. However, you can use the manual mode to work with the exposure speed for this type of snapshots, but you need to know what you are doing. 4. The "Children and Pets" mode won't do the job if your children or pets dare to move while you take the picture. 5. The Image Stabilization feature is not effective when you reach the .6 sec. exposure time level. You get blurred images if you don't use a tripod. 6. Flash light will wash colors at distances shorter than 9 feet (3 meters), even when the flash light output is set to minimum. 7. Cumbersome date and time display feature for resolutions higher than 2 MP. You have to request that through the software features on the PC. When you make prints on your printer, you use a feature related to printing, when you have the prints done commercially, you have to print date on each picture through the text adding feature on the software. Cumbersome! 8. For so many features packed in this camera, one would expect more than 9 Megapixels. This camera is best suited for someone who wants to use a full manual mode and a strong zoom. It's automatic and "easy" features produce images that are as mediocre as the ones obtained with cheaper "point and shoot" cameras. So, I would not recommend this camera to those who just want to use it in auto or "easy" mode. I think that Canon made a very good effort here to put lots of features in a small package, however, the end result, which is the picture quality, is not that great unless you spend a lot of time taking pictures in the manual mode and editing the pictures on the PC. I would recommend this camera to my friends, but only to those who are capable and have time to learn it and work with it in manual mode.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, durable
Cons: Difficult to use, Complicated controls/menu, Poor image quality, Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

My husband got me this camera for my birthday. A quality camera with all the features of an SLR without the high price. I use it everyday. Takes fantastic pictures at all distances. I was able to take a close up picture of a deer feeding that was over 150 yards away without disturbing it. The only thing is the more you zoom the more camera shake. So a tripod is needed when you use full zoom.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, great value for your money
Cons: screen is hard to see in full sunlight
I would recommend this to a friend!

SLOW

I love Cannon. This new Cannon is the slowest I have ever seen for flash recycle. It takes 10-11 seconds to recycle and take another picture. I have two small children. I don't have 10 seconds to wait. Otherwise it is a very nice camera. We are returning ours to get a Cannon with a much shorter recycle time.
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Heavy/Bulky, hard to find the zoom button
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I get 70 pictures out of a set of batteries

I have owned other Cannon camers and am sold on the quality and performance. I was very excited to purchase a smaller digital camera which has such great zoom capabilities. HOWEVER MY BUBBLE WAS POPPED TO FIND I CAN ONLY GET ABOUT 70 PICTURES ON A NEW SET OF BATTERIES. I think out of all fairness to all of us Cannon followers this handicap should be clearly mentioned on the box. I am going to persue returning mine. I have owned it for about six months and have tried everything to lengthen the life of the batteries without success. THIS HANDICAP PRETTY MUCH RENDERS THE CAMERA USELESS. So back to packing around my larger Cannon camers to get my pictures. Hey Cannon folks please let me know when you fix this problem and I will be first in line to buy it. Love everything else about the camera. Especially the large screen.
