This is a great camera. My first high-priced digital camera, and I can't get enough of it. The features are amazing, the settings are great, LOVE the color change feature (sepia, black and white). It is a bit complicated but well worth the time to get to know it! Takes the best images I've ever captured. Plus I already dropped it once (oops!) but it's fine! Buy a wrist strap, it doesn't come with one. But amazing camera!
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

very pleased

I bought this camera a little over a yr ago. I am very pleased with the quality of pictures it takes... Especially outdoors. I have three very active daughters and I hardly ever get a blurry picture.... The only times the pictures were blurry is when I had the camera on the wrong setting... I love this camera and will more than likely stick with canon products from here on out :)

Spectacular Value Super Zoom
on June 28, 2009

I have exclusively used Canon equipment for over 30 years including extensive 35mm SLR gear. In every case they are solidly constructed and optically excellent.
My wife and I have shared her SD700IS on a number of trips and its super compact size and broad capabilities have covered 80% of what I wanted in my first digital camera. The main feature I was looking for was greater zoom capability without sacrificing compact convenience or moderate price. The second major requirement I had was to be able to exercise full manual control of shutter speed, aperture, and depth of field. From my first investigation the SX110 seemed the camera that most closely met these requirements.
With its 10:1 zoom and effective 36-360mm equivalent focal length the camera can cover everything from moderate crowd or wide angle to a fair level of effectiveness in sports photography or pulling in the detail of those wonderful frescoed ceilings in Italian churches.
Any camera with a 225 page manual can't be said to have "simple controls" but the Canon is little different from any other modern digital...they all have more computer power than 70s vintage mainframes and the designers manage to use all of it. That said, the best approach is to study only those features that you truly plan to use. You can always refine and add to your versatility with the camera later if additional features are needed. Once you learn the layout of the manual it is easier to find what you need in it than most that I have seen.
I was a bit concerned about giving up an optical viewfinder, as many LCD screens can wash out in bright sunlight. The 110 seems better than many in this regard, and the screen is large, covering most of the back of the camera. This does squeeze multi-function controls into a small area, and some of the complexity of use is the need for these to fill so many different purposes depending on shooting mode and what the camera is doing in any particular situation. The absence of a viewfinder also means that the camera is not held up to the eye to shoot...which actually can be an advantage because it is much easier to see what is occurring outside the frame and adjust if necessary.
The speed of mutli-frame shots is rather slow, so it is not ideal for shooting fast action. I don't use the movie function often, so the complaints of reviewers about this function is not an issue for me.
I find the ability to tailor functions to the way I shoot, such as using grid lines on the LCD for framing, to be a really nice plus for the camera. Some of these functions would only be used for specific shots (e.g various flash settings) and it will no doubt take me some time and carrying the manual around with me to learn to use these effectively. However, I found it very easy to just start using the SX110 without much delving into the book.
The battery situation is a trade off. In one way it is nice to know that, in a worst case situation, you can duck into almost any store and pick up a couple of AA alkalines to get you through the day. On the other these are much bulkier than the lithium batteries in cameras like the SD series, and have short shooting life. You can partly overcome this, however, by using rechargeable NiMh batteries, which are readily available. Replacement batteries are also significantly cheaper than the lithium variety. The NimH batteries Canon sells are 2500mAh, but I have successfully used some 2000mAh that I had lying around, without a problem.
I mentioned depth of field visualization as a requirement. Unfortunately neither the SX110 nor any other compact digital I have seen provides the ability to preview depth on the screen to any usable degree. So I still have to rely on my old skills of knowing focal depths and hyper focal distances based on aperture...imperfect at best.
In summary, the SX110is fits in the same size case my wife has for her much smaller SD, but adds more than double the zoom range and full manual controls. I am very pleased with my decision and would highly recommend the camera to anyone who wants a high quality, broad capability unit with a broad zoom range, reasonable size, and moderate price.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, Missing features/settings

Best overall camera for the price

On a budget I found this camera and the camera features are amazing. I do photography of my son and other random things like scenery and outdoors. this camera is excellent in all aspects. i can take great pictures in pitch dark condition. with the 10X zoom you can get close ups with out any trouble. face detection helps alot when taking portraits. overall this camera is great. The only thing I can say that is bad is that I would have liked it to have a strap to use around the neck instead of the little hand hold one that is provided.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, Short battery life

Extremely Happy about the purchase

Even though I rated it to be overall 4 stars, there are times that I know it is performing at 5. I upgraded to this camera from the Elf SD 890 IS (5x optimal zoom and 10 mp). Quality was incredible. It took a bit of getting used to this camera, heavier and bulkier. First concern was that it didn't fit into my pocket anymore, but small enough to carry anywhere and take an incredible shot. With the 10 optical zoom and 40 total zoom, if you use a mono pod the way I do, not to carry a tripod, this camera take a pro quality shot. I have zoomed in to take a picture of a tigers eye without seeing a cage or even the entire tiger. I have been able to get a picture of a bird bathing in the fountain on the TV settings that are sharp, light enough and at the most optimal quality. I wish the camera was a bit faster, but for what it is worth and the size, it is more then does it's job. The battery packs that I was also used to, was great and lighter, but now I don't have to worry about charging or not my battery. I have plenty of batteries anywhere I go. Overall, it is a Great Buy for the money. The last thing is the 3 inch monitor. You can see it from across the room and review your pictures before you download right away. It is crisp and great quality lcd monitor.
Pros: 10x zoom, batteries anywhere you go, no need for bigger camera to carry around, large lcd to preview your work
Cons: bigger then elf, heavier due to the batteries, some battery life doesn't last long
