The ATH-ANC9 provides three noise cancellation modes that adjust for high, medium and low ambient noise. This may sound like feature creep . . . but the result is quite impressive. This feature almost eliminates the "water pressure" feeling that I encountered with other noise cancelling products. In addition the lower the ambient noise / noise cancellation setting the higher was my perceived overall fidelity of the sound. I dig this product . . . TWO THUMBS WAY UP!
Pros: Block Noise, OFFICE, Travel
Cons: on/off switch is a little stiff

There is no doubt that audio-technica makes a fine product but the ANC9 was a disappointment. My previous ANC7 headphone was an excellent value and I literally wore them out. I decided to replace them with the 9. The 9 doesn't offer that much better noise cancelling over the 7 for the money. The 9 eats batteries compared to the 7. The battery compartment was designed by an engineer not considering use and therefore difficult to replace the battery as compared to the method of the 7 which for my old pair was super simple and easy. I would have assumed that audio-technica would understand their customer base and know that anyone over 40 would have real trouble with changing the battery. Very poor design. I have had to sew the entire seam of the foam cover on both ear cups. The splitting of the seam occurred just before and after the warranty period. Oh and when the battery dies while in use you'll get loud pop in your ears...very annoying. As I said audio-technica produces quality products and I will consider another headset from them....but it would be the 7 NOT the 9.
Pros: Comfortable, Great Sound
Cons: Poor Value
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The sound quality of these headphones are great, but after the first month or so, the noise-cancelling function just stopped working, which defeats the purpose of why I bought these headphones in the first place. They are great if you want to spend an outrageous amount of money for a very limited amount of a very enjoyable listening experience.
Pros: Casual Listening
Cons: Poor durability

I have been an Audio Technica user for quite some time now, and I have to admit the ATH-ANC9 headphones are so impressive. 1) The new Tri-Level Cancellation is so easy to use and extremely useful. 2) The headphones are extremeley comfortable. 3) Most importantly, the audio quality: it is second to none. I have tried all the major companies ie. Bose, Beats by Dr. Dre and Sony... Not only the noise cancelling feature is better, the sound quality and bass is simply remarkable.
Pros: Block Noise, Casual Listening, gaming, OFFICE, Pro Audio / DJ / Mixing, Travel
Cons: sound leakage in quiet areas

I was excited about this product and got a fantastic deal of the major online retailer but pair I purchased developed a faint high pitched squeal which I tried to ignore but gave up and returned them, I asked for a replacement pair bc I loved them so much, minus the issue, but of course the second pair not only had that high pitched squeal but also had an additional problem, the noise cancelling was not even in both ears, and I could really feel it, I could notice the difference and couldn't handle it. Please AT fix these issues. My previous pair ant-anc7b was fairly good pair, my cord got damaged and my ear cups leatherette covering the foam came apart at the glue, which I stitched together.
Pros: great noise cancelling when working properly
Cons: high pitched squeal, noise cancelling uneven

I bought these for an upcoming long-haul plane trip, after a friend recommended this brand. I have to say that these headphones are disappointing in all regards. 1) Only one side produces any sound, and that has noticeable static, which is increasing over the time I've been testing them. The other side is dead. 2) Sound cancelling is at best 50%, nowhere near 95% as advertised. 3) The case is ENORMOUS and far too bulky to use for travel. 4) The earpieces are very uncomfortable as they exert a lot of lateral pressure on the ears. YMMV. These will be promptly returned to the retailer.
Pros: None
Cons: case is too bulky for travel., headphones arrived with one side doa., poor sound canceling 50% at best., very uncomfortable ear pieces.

I have had these headphones for over a year and I like these headphones a lot. They work very well and are comfortable on long distance flights and make a huge difference. You would be amazed how much nicer it is in cattle class with these headphones! The only problem I have had is that somehow the cell-phone type cable broke even though I haven't been using it.
Pros: really works well on airplanes to cut down noise.
