Excellent Entry Level DLR

This is a great camera for the person transitioning from point-and-shoots. I almost made the mistake of going all in and buying one of the more expensive and more advanced Cannon DLR’s right from the start. I’m glad I didn’t. If you’re new to DLR’s, I recommend you get this one (Rebel XS) or other similar entry level DLR first. Keep in mind that DLRs are mainly used by professionals, and enthusiast and hobbyists that are looking for more than what a point-and-shoot can offer. So that means it will take a little time on your part to understand how to use and properly apply all the different features of the Rebel XS in order to fully appreciate the full potential of this entry level DLR -and ultimately take those breath-taking pictures.
But don’t let that intimidate you; the Cannon XS is relatively simple to use and not terribly expensive. And if you’re a newbie, this is a great camera to get started with before you move on to the more expensive and elaborate DLR’s.
I hope this helps.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy

Average Mom - Love this camera!
on October 11, 2009

I am a mom of a 9 month old and have always owned a regular canon powershot camera. I was getting frustrated because my son would move so quickly, i was taking horrible pictures. I wanted a new camera without a delay that would allow me to take good quality pictures and not miss anything. I was looking around the canon website and thought that I had made a decision on a camera until I called the customer service department and told them what I was looking for. They suggested this camera and I was extremely apprehensive because I thought an SLR cameras would be too complicated for me, just an average person - new mom - to figure out. The customer support person was so helpful that I knew if I had an issues on how to work the camera, I could just call there and they would help me. I ended up buying this camera and I LOVE IT! It is so easy to use and takes great quality pictures! It literally took me 10 minutes to read about the settings and I was off and running. I haven't explored the more complex settings (maual) but I don't need to - I also take pictures of my 6 year old playing sports and they come out great! I love just holding down the button and taking continuous pictures so I don't miss a move! Love it ! The only con for me is that it doesn't come with a good zoom - you have to buy another lens and that gets pricey - overall love it - go buy it!
Pros: Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: zoom

Great Starter SLR

So the Canon Rebel XS is a great SLR camera for the beginner photographer or like myself, photographer with little money. I use it mostly for some gnarly skate and surf shoots, along with high school track and football games. It performs nicely, is fairly sturdy, and is extremely easy to use for newbs. In my opinion, start and learn with the XS and waste your money on lenses. The camera body isn't what you should be too worried about. It's all about the lense dude.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Lots of features

A great camera for the novice, or semi-pro. I wanted a camera with high resolution, automatic shot capability and manual modes to experiment with. This camera has all of that! Canon's photo download program could be more user friendly, but no faults with the camera at all.

Best entry level DSLR available

I've had this camera for 15 months now and have taken over 5000 pictures with virtually no hiccups whatsoever. Only minor gripe I have is that the autofocus very occasionally "misses", but I think this is due to the inexpensive kit lens rather than the camera itself. Needless to say, I've been very happy with the Rebel XS. Even though some newer competing entry level DSLR's now have some marginally better features, this one still seems to have a greater overall quality feel. Now I'm considering upgrading to the new T2i. If I do, then I'll probably keep this one as a backup.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: occasional autofocus "misses"
