Wonderful Camera

I have been a Canon point-and-shoot user for several years and was looking to upgrade to a DSLR for the first time. I definitely wanted a Canon, as I was already familiar with the menu and controls, so I chose the XS because of its price point. With the higher models only providing a few additional autofocus points, a couple megapixels, and the ability to use a wireless remote control, I don't regret my decision "just" to get the XS! I have never felt like I settled.
The image quality is incredible, especially in lower light conditions when 800 and 1600 ISO settings are necessary. A few other reviews have commented on battery life being an issue, but I've been able to take 600+ pictures (with no flash) without even getting a low battery warning, so that must be an isolated issue.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this camera. While it won't be as portable to someone who is used to the convenience of a point-and-shoot, it is much lighter than many other DSLR models on the market (especially those that are older). You won't regret this purchase for a second!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality

Excellent entry level camera

I did a lot of research before buying this camera in February 2010. Usually I switch hobbies very frequently and I wasn't sure how long I would be able to sustain my interest in learning to use a DSLR. I looked at other brands too and finally chose to go with this camera because feature-wise, it was the best entry-level camera at the time.
I took photography classes, assisted professional photographers and attended workshops. My skills are much better now and apart from a faster burst (for sports) and the option for "spot" metering, I can't ask for anything more in a camera.
Instead of upgrading to another camera, I bought three fast lenses (Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, Canon 50mm f1.8) and this camera makes amazing pictures.
The auto-focus is surprisingly fast if you learn how to use it right. The center auto-focus point works great in low-light with a fast lens. In bright light, the auto-focus is very fast and tracks moving objects very well when using AI or AI Servo. Low light pictures using the fast lenses (f1.8 and f2.8) are great up to ISO 800. The picture style menu is also very useful allowing you to control the sharpness/contrast/saturation/Hue of pictures you make with this camera.
I have made nearly 2500 photos with this camera in the last 3 months including outdoor sports, indoor sports, on-location portraits and in-studio portraits. I have only had to recharge the battery twice during this period. The camera is small, very light and easy to carry around.
At this point I am ready to get a faster camera to shoot sports, but will still retain this camera for all other uses. I absolutely LOVE this camera.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: no spot meter

This camera is amazing. I'm as amateur as they come in terms of photography, but this camera is very easy to use and every picture comes out crisp and clear.
It's easy to take with you wherever you need to go, and with the full auto setting, quickly snapping the perfect picture is never something to worry about. I also like the fact that there are many other settings that you can grow and expand with at your own discretion.
As far as build and usage, I have yet to find anything I have a problem with. Oh, and the battery life is fantastic.
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, easy to use, good battery life

GREAT starter camera

This is my first step out of the point and shoot digital cameras. I have shot film for 30+ years ranging from landscape to weddings and portraits. This camera will do it all and do it well. I have the 18-55 lens, 55-250 lens and have just purchased the 60 mm Macro lens. I haven't found a flaw yet that wasn't my own fault. I have also added the battery grip to this camera and hit makes it heavier and adds that little extra grip for my big hands. I'd recommend this camera to anyone stepping up from point and shoot to the next step in digital photography

I received this camera as a Christmas gift this year from my husband. I had done my research on digital SLRs and found wonderful reviews of this camera. I am a Photography major, just starting out in school. This is my first SLR and have found it very easy to use, even for my husband and children. Some of the menus can seem a little intimidating at first, but with patience, they are easily adapted to. I attribute getting my first photgraphy "jobs" to the beautiful pictures this camera captures!
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use

I really like this camera. I got this for Christmas and had a point and shoot before. Not having a lot of camera knowledge I find it easy to use and the quality of pictures I get with this compared to my previous camera is night and day. The battery rarely needs charging (bonus) and it is pretty easy to play around with and get what you are looking for. It has also given me direction on what to learn to become a better photographer. I use this mostly for my kids/family photos and find that it doesn't have the delay most digital cameras have allowing me to get the shot I want.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

No blurry shots yet!

Our classic auto restoration bought this camera as a replacement for an old outdated digital camera we had used for almost the last decade. After a quick battery charge and a thumbing through of the manual, I slapped the battery pack in and a 4 gig sd into the slot and started taking pictures of literally everything in our shop including the corner flower pot.
I will say that although the point and shoot with the auto focus is great (no disappointments as it mimiks what i was used to), the manual and auto-focus coupled with the live view is just what the doctor ordered for what we do documenting the very smallest of deatils on classic and vintage auotmobiles. For instance-
In live view with the setting on 'P' and set to AF, you can zoom up on a subject (in my case an old carburetor) and then hit the "+" to get either a 5x or a 10x view of the subject. Then while watching it all in live view you just hit the AF until that zoomed up part comes into perfect focus and then just click the shutter. Switching over to MF and doing it manually was even more pleasing. The Image stabilization allows you to press the shutter half way steading the 10x zoomed portion used to focus until the absolute desired clarity is obtained, then just click and perfect pictures abound. Amazing!
Overall I am most pleased with the "live view" coupled with its 10x zoom for focusing (yes, you can literally focus a piece of an eyelash at this point) taking pictures of still subjects (old car parts in my case) allowing me to know exactly the amount of detail the picture will have before I click the shutter.
I have yet to take a blurry picture with this camera, I am not sure it's even possible with the live view feature!
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Complicated controls/menu
