Best Camera I have ever owned

I have had this camera for about 1 and 1/2 years. I have yet to take a bad picture with this camera. I especially love the sport mode setting. I used this function on a vacation to Florida and Cherry Festival in Traverse City Michigan at the air show featuring the Blue Angels. For the Florida sport mode shot,it was used for a musket demostration at the fort in St. Augustine. The camera was able to capture the complete firing sequence with no distortion. For the air show, sport mode captured many passes of the Blue Angels going through their manouvers. Loved how the auto focus functioned flawlessy while holding the shutter button down for the series of shots it took. Nothing whatsoever as of now has disappointed me in any way. Have taken close to 7000 pics with this camera and I am impressed that i have yet had to use any kind of photoshop or editing programs for my photos. I just just say enough about this camera.
Cons: wish it had an option for live view in auto mode.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A great step up

I have owned (and produced some of my best photo work) with the Canon PowerShot S50. It has been my work horse for about 5 years. This was my first expierence with digital. The only problem was the lack of lens flexability. This past December I decided that it was time to step up to a DSLR. After much research into other Mfg's, and a limited budget, I decided to go with the Canon EOS REBEL XS, with the optional 75-300 lens. This camera has exceded my expections. I am an outdoor nature lover and take many landscape and wildlife pictures. The ability to quick change from the 55 mm to the 300mm, and still have auto focus, has given me some pictures that I might have missed. e.g. A LYNX that stayed for 2 days prowling our back yard for an easy meal, to the winter birds that feed at our many feeders. I love the live view feature. This lets me preset my pix, the camera is tripod mounted, so that I'm ready for that moment. A plus plus feature. I also like the light weight of the camera. Easy to carry but yet it still has, looks, and feels rugged. The design and looks of this camera makes me look like a professional. Taking pictures at my Grandsons basketball game, a parent wanted to know if I was from a local newspaper and if they could get pictures. I can't get over the battery life. I compare this to my S50. I had bought a second battery for that camera because of the short life. I think I've only charged it once in 2 1/2 months, and I've shot a lot of pixs. The large LCD monitor is also a plus for instant review of pix.
I like the idea of a camera that offers full auto for the snap shots at birthday partys etc., to full manual for a composed picture. This camera will make a novice look like a pro., and at the same time will not destroy your bank account.
For me the only down side of this camera is the SD card. It just might be me, but I like the sturdy feeling of the compact flash card. They are also much eaiser to insert in the various card reader devices.
At this time I'm basing the quality and longevity of this camera on my experience of the Powershot S50 and the name Canon. Time will tell, but I hope it will be a long marriage
I have already recommended this camer to many of my friends whom are also contemplating a new camera.
I would recommend this camera to any one who is serious about photography.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: compact flash card would have been a better choice

Wonderful First dSLR

Simply put, this camera helped me grow. Its simple, user-friendly features were easy to use, and being a beginner, I didn't notice any missing features. A more experienced photographer probably would have expected a few more features, but being a beginner I am content in my ignorance. As other reviewers have mentioned, the camera is quite noisy. I feel like a distraction during performances, sacrificing stage action and waiting to snap a picture while the audience is cheering. Also, while not as light as say, a point and shoot, the camera does feel as if it has a certain fragility. I am almost certain that if I were to drop it even a short distance, it would damage it. I have owned this camera for about seven months now and taken thousands of pictures. Still, I can count on both hands how many times I've charged the battery. Maybe I got lucky. Overall, I am very satisfied with this camera. I would definitely recommend it to another beginning, or even a serious amateur.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: Poor build quality, noisy

Switched from Other Brand

I've used another major brand since 1973 and thought they were the best film cameras, but when I looked at DSLRs, this one just felt better. For me, it is a great value with features like live view, simple to use on auto but plenty of manual options, and a surprisingly good built-in flash. Point and shoot owners would be amazed at the difference in the results with this camera, and the price is not much more. Also, I thought AA batteries were best, but this camera changed my mind.
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, great value, adequate flash, live view

great, but needs more accessories

I'm a student and have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of this camera versus my previous point and shoot canon (although even that one was pretty pleasing). I'm continually impressed with the breathtaking images i have been able to create with the rebel xs. the battery life is amazing! i can shoot over 200 photos with flash and still have almost half of my battery life left. It also charges pretty quickly.
the one thing i would appreciate is for the company to produce a wireless remote that is compatible with the xs. the only other remote you have that will work with my camera is one with a cable that is only two feet long. i need a wireless one for the photography i am interested in (self portraiture).
Thank You!
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: lack of accessories

Absolutely love this camera. Picture quality always a great thing. I never have any issues with it. The battery life will last for days. I bought this camera primarily because I like to take photos of family events. Took this camera with me on vacation to New York, easy to travel with. The shots from the Empire State Building down to the rest of the city was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend/family member.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Slow Start-up time

Very Pleased

I bought this camera to capture my one year old boy. It works great as a "point and shoot" in auto mode for my wife, and lets me tinker with settings as much as I want.
It's fast, and with the addition of the 430EX, captures great photos both indoor and out.
The performance speaks for itself. In about a month, I've shot 2000 photos on two battery charges.
For a "starter" DSLR, I can't imagine what features I'd need in a more expensive camera. Great buy.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, good battery life

The only problem I have had with this camera is the lack of a spot metering system. my cat is black, and the camera always shows him as a silhouette.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, amazing battery
Cons: no spot metering
