Close shave, very quiet

This is my 3rd Philips razor and the best in terms of a close shave. It's also very quiet.
The battery seems to last me about 10 - 12 days on a full charge. Had it lasted as long as my previous razor, I'd have given this a 5 star rating.
The spectra 8894 XL typically lasted 24 days - which meant I could save space and leave the cord at home - even on 3 week vacations.
If you are traveling longer than a week with the 1290X/40 - you'll need to pack the cord and stand.
2 issues here:
1. You can't plug the cord directly into the razor - you have to use the stand.
2. You can't fit the cord and stand into the travel case, so will need to pack elsewhere
Overall though - very happy with this purchase - best electric shave thus far.
Pros: close shave, quiet shave, looks good, easy to clean - rinse with water
Cons: battery life, travel case doesn't have room for cord or stand
I would recommend this to a friend!

Two Units Won't Work
on January 3, 2014

Received this unit as a present. The first razor would not turn on or even charge. The second razor would charge, but wouldn't turn on. This makes it obvious that the quality of this razor is poor. Avoid this razor.
Cons: wont turn on.

It's not that great and way overpriced

I think I'm a blade guy. I bought one of these razors and it stopped working. I swapped it for another one and it wouldn't take a charge. I swapped it for another; it worked and took a charge but it has an electronic squeal when it charges. I decided to keep it because I was really getting tired of going to get new ones.
This razor works but it doesn't work well. If you have hair longer than 1/8", you're going to be shaving for a while. You will be stopping every five minutes to empty out the head because it doesn't really hold much hair. You'll be buying dental picks to use to clean the hair out if you don't empty it often enough while shaving.
All of the technology that has gone into this razor is hype and gimmick. It's a razor and a mediocre one at that. It doesn't clear your face of unwanted hair in one pass, or even two or three or four.... You must go over the same spot many times. I bought this razor to save time and in the long run, money vs. blade shaving. I should have kept the blade. (Actually, I did. I still use it sometimes after I shave with this razor)
This razor does not shave as closely as a blade. Not even close. After a very thorough shave, I feel like I shaved with a blade about 12 hours prior. If you want a close shave, use a blade. Mach 3 is what I have had the best results with.
Don't buy this razor. In fact, I've tried several electrics. Don't by any of them; they're a poor alternative to blades.
Pros: looks good, they won't, display any other, cons if i don't have enough, pros to add to the list.
Cons: power button gets hit while shaving, not enough room for hair shavings, gets plugged with hair, can be difficult to clean, doesn't lift flat hairs effectivly, very slow to shave, doesn't provide a close shave
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Cost vs Efficacy

While this product is cool to look at and hold in your hand it does not shave as well as I expected considering the cost. Even without a cost comparison I have a problem getting a good, clean shave, especially when shaving without a lather. Sorry but I had higher hopes; that's why I spent the money.
Pros: good looking and feels nice in the hand
Cons: doesn't give a close enough shave for me.

Mediocre experience

I've been using an electric razor for almost 25 years. I had a Spectra 8894 which was just a flat out awesome razor. Thought I would buy a new 1290X as it was the only model w/a digital readout. I've had it for 2 months and have to say I am disappointed. I have a heavy beard and the razor does a poor job on short hairs around your nose and lip. It's clearly an example of form over function. You would think for this kind of money that you would get a decent travel case and solid stand for recharging--that's just not the case..I am also working on my 3rd actual razor as I have had to return it twice since it would not fully recharge. I expect more from Norelco....
Pros: nice looking, easy to clean, digital readout
Cons: expensive, not good for heavy beards, flimsy stand and travel case
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Lacks Over-Charge Protection, Needs Daily Cleaning
on June 19, 2012

I like Norelco shavers in general. This new model clearly should have basic over-charge protection for its battery. Having to set my timer to remember to remove it from its charger to prevent ruining its battery is unacceptable for any electric razor. Also, this model mandates daily cleaning, while my older Norelco can go a week or more with no ill effects from not cleaning. Also, it's inexpensive nylon case pales in comparison to the wonderful hard travel case included with my old Norelco. It shaves no better or worse than my 5-year old Norelco with original blades still plenty sharp. I expected a lot more in this product.
Pros: it's attractive, charges fast
Cons: lacks over-charge protection, requires too frequent cleaning, case is poor protection, replacement blades too expensive, unit itself too expensive
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Well worth the money

I've been a user of Philips electric razors for many years. The 3D razor 1290X is superior to the ones I have used before. I'm glad I bought this one.
