SensoTouch 3D satisfaction

Purchased SensoTouch 3D 1290X just over 60 days ago and felt compelled to share my experience. This is the most expensive shaver I have ever purchased. Researched several other brands and totally satisfied with overall performance of the SensoTouch 3D.
Shaving style – 6 days a week.
Beard: average growth rate and rough.
Skin: slightly sensitive.
Past shaving products: single and multi blade razor, rotary shaver and high-end foil shaver. Most recently 3 blade razor.
Reason for switching to shaver: primary requirement was comfort of shave with quality of shave a close second.
The SensoTouch 3D delivers in both wet and dry shaving scenarios. I use about half the shaving foam when wet shaving compared to past use of a razor. Very smooth cut with no skin irritation. Recommended to use wet, particularly if you have a tough beard or a little extra stubble from skipping a day of shaving. The battery life is phenomenal. Consistently provides 15 or more shaves per full charge. Charges from nearly empty battery to full charge in about an hour. Heads flip back for easy cleaning. Charger stand has small suction cups on the bottom to prevent tipping. Not a frequent trimmer user, but it does work well. The travel case is contoured to the unit for fit and protection.
Highly recommended if you want a shave that is equivalent to a high end multi-blade razor without having to constantly replace expensive blades and experiencing occasional skin irritation from a razor.

An engineering triumph.

The Norelco 1290x is an engineering triumph for the famous Dutch electric razor manufacturer, Philips. Truly a magnum opus, after years of research and perfecting of form and function.
It is magnificently designed, built, and finished to the finest European manufacturing standards. Its performance easily makes it the best electric razor available on the world market. Yes, it is uncanny (and almost unbelievable), but a truly three-dimensional floating razor head has been achieved which glides effortlessly over the complicated and sensitive surfaces of the human face and neck. A wide range of facial hair lengths, textures, and geometries are removed with one light stroke, without offending the skin surface as straight-edge blades do when they produce skin edema (swelling) and give an artificial "smoothness" which is actually due to the injured skin swelling well up above the adjacent hairs. Anyone who has used a straight blade knows the feel of this puffy "smooth" injured skin.
A light and nimble touch is, of course, essential with a precision instrument like the 1290X, which balances perfectly in your hand. I would recommend buying a spray can of the Norelco razor lubricant (containing isobutane and EtOH) and of course keeping the remarkable 3D razor head (and your face) clean.

Shaving quality is Very Good, but battery life and charging could be better.

The shaving comfort and quality provided by the SensoTouch 3D are very good. Some areas, though, are a step down from my previous Norelco shaver. These areas for improvement include:
Battery life: My previous Norelco provided 120 minutes of shaving per charge. the SensoTouch 3D only is rated to provide 60 minutes. Further, it seems to only get 60 minutes on the first charge. Capacity degrades to 50 --> 55 minutes on subsequent charges.
Charging protocol: The requirement indicated in the manual to unplug the shaver as soon as charging is complete to avoid overcharging is inappropriate for a device with a LiON battery, especially a shaver that would typically be used in the morning or evening. The shaver should incorporate circuitry to allow the charging base to be plugged in all of the time to keep the shaver charged.
Travel: Although the shaver comes with a travel case, this only holds the shaver itself. If you will be away for morn than a week, you also need to pack the cord, wall charger, and charging stand.
Display: The SensoTouch 3D display provides much less information than my previous Norelco. Shaving time and other information should be added to the display.
Pros: close comfortable shave
Cons: battery life trails off, not travel friendly, inconvenient charging protocol

I have purchased many electric razors over the years, and this one is by far the best! It is easy to use, shows how much shaving time is left on the battery, and the blades open for easy cleaning.

The best yet

This is by far the best electric shaver for the great unknown that is the neck region! Over the last 6 years I have tried the Braun 7 series, Panasonic's Arc IV series, and even Philips' own Nivea system. The Sensotouch 3D is incomparable, its performance is so effective. Does the chin/moustache area and cheeks super fast and super close - I can't feel any roughness whatsoever after shaving when passing fingers against the grain. Easily the best clean up job on the neck out of the competition. I have a lot of sensitive spots on the neck with growth in multiple directions. This shaver gets it all with 2 or 3 passes of circular motion - no redness, tenderness or stray hairs left.
The battery gauge seems a bit awkward - first 6 months or so it was giving me 74 mins (!) of shave time. Then it fell to 48 mins. I also noticed some condensation in the LCD display, which may have caused this malfunction (Note: I have abused this shaver over the past year - I leave it in the shower when not being used so it gets thoroughly dowsed with water everytime anyone takes a shower - probably not the best way to treat it)
Pros: fast - does not need too many go-overs, as good as a razor when used wet on the neck
Cons: battery gauge seems inaccurate

This is the smoothest, best shaving electric razor i've ever used and I have been an electric razor user for over 30 years. It's easy and fast to clean. I continuously get more than the listed 20 shaves from a single charge. Highly recommend.
