Been using Norelco shavers since 1962. This one is a bit complicated to take apart for cleaning. Shaver is light weight and great to hold. Charging stand is bulky and heavy for carry-on baggage when traveling.

The Best in a string of Evolutionry Phillips razors.

This razor eliminated two problems I had with the previous model.
This model cuts short stubble and extra long whiskers cleanly leaving my skin very smooth.

This is the best electric razor I've ever used, and I've been using electric razors all my life. Philips Norelco razors have always been my favorite, and I've used all the competitive products. The 1290X is quiet, light, and delivers a nice close shave very quickly. Cleanup is easy and fast.
If I had to criticize anything, it would be that you have to place the razor in the stand to charge. You cannot connect the electric cord directly to the razor as you can with other models. This may be a slight inconvenience when travelling.
Overall, I love it!
Pros: close shave, quiet, easy to clean, hand contour
Cons: requires the base to charge
I would recommend this to a friend!

Warning: Original Shaving head discontinued

I have used Norelco shavers for over 35 yrs. I purchased this shaver (1290x) and have used it for 2 years. It was the best shaver that I have ever used. HOWEVER... Norelco has replaced the original shaving head for this model. The new style shaving head is inferior to the original shaving head and it appears to be of cheaper quality. It does not operate as a 3D system but is more of a 2D system. The new shaving head does not give as smooth of a shave as the original and is harder to clean than the original. Too bad Norelco messed up an excellent razor.
Cons: new shaving head is inferior to the original

Good but not great.

Having used Philips Shavers exclusively for 47 years I was excited about what appeared to be a real breakthrought in design.
The unit is comfortable to hold and the head follows the contours easily. But my old shaver did just as good a job for $100 less!
The trimmer works very well in the nose hair trimmer (which I use) but not with the shaver for trimming sideboards. It leaves a very ragged finish.
I travel frequently and was used to just plugging the charger into the shaver. Now I have to cart around the awkward counter stand to be able to charge it.
They need a solid case with built in charging capability or go back to direct charging.
I do like the easy rinsing and cleaning with this head.

Huge Disappointment

After many years of using foam & razor, I was really looking forward to the convenience of moving to an electric. I wanted the best shave possible, so I went with the best one (1290X) from the best company (Norelco).
I was expecting the temporary rash until the skin becomes conditioned and the loss of closeness, so I was not surprised by these items. However, after a couple of weeks, my skin did become conditioned just as Philips had predicted provided I don't put too much pressure of the shaver on the skin. But the loss of closeness is much worse than expected. It is not a close shave at all. Right after shaving, my three year old granddaughter often asks, "Why didn't you shave today, grandpa?"
I'm also disappointed in the amount of 'work' and time required. I thought just a pass or two over the area would do, but you have to move it in circular patterns over the entire area about 12-15 times to get even a somewhat acceptable closeness.
When using wet or with foam, the shaver seems to glide across the skin more smoothly than on bare skin, but it doesn't seem to result in any better quality of shave and makes the shaver clean-up more difficult and messy.
Lastly, Norelco has done much more research in electric shaving using rotary type cutting than I, but at least for my use, I think the foil type back-and-forth type razor might be more to my liking and plan to try one of those before giving up on electric shaving altogether.
In summary, I am very disappointed in the overall shave provided by this shaver.
Pros: large number of shaves from one charge, rash does discontinue after about 2 weeks, build quality seems very well made
Cons: not a close shave, not a time saver, no benefit from "wet" feature, requires many passes over the same area, high cost
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
