The video feature on this camera is excellent! We took it to a fireworks show on the 4th of July and the fireworks showed up so clear and the sound was perfect.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

So much better than I expected...

I bought this as a back-up to an expensive DSLR. (I 'had' to have a viewfinder- no new tricks for old dogs)
Once I added a small handle in the tripod socket, it became my favorite 'carry' camera. Picture quality is exceptional, and I've actually shot front page photos with this little gem.
PS- battery life with lithiums has been excellent
Pros: easy to use, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, discreet
I would recommend this to a friend!

Fabulous!

I got this camera last year and it's been great! I went to White Sands and was a little worried how it would do with the blinding white on white dunes. I should have know canon would have such an amazing product! The hills came out wonderfully, even capturing the texture in a way I had never seen before with other cameras.
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

Short Battery Life - Good Features

Could be better, but especially for price, this camera is a great all-around.
This is a great camera and the zoom and macro lenses work well. It is "rugged" and does't damage easily. It shoots great in good lighting, but in the dark, the camera flash, even with different adjustments, is lacking some. All around good camera - served me well since 2007 with no breaks or mishaps and has gone everywhere from parks to mountians. Has less megapixels than the Rebell II, but has similar features in a smaller size. Easy to figure out and very easy to use.
The battery life is often somewhat lacking even with Enerzinger Max batteries. If the camera is low on batteries, the picture quality is reduced by 50% or more.
All around, good camera.
Pros: good small compatible features, easy to use, good macro lenses, good zoom, not easily damaged
Cons: battery life is somewhat short, doesn't always shoot well in bad lighting, slow and unresponsive sometimes

Exactly what I needed

I was looking for an inexpensive digicam to keep in the glove compartment (you never know when you'll need it -- or REALLY need it), because I don't take my A520 everywhere. Then I saw the price and features of the A590IS and realized that, for remarkably little, I could get ALL the new features I might want in my main camera, and just relegate my very capable A520 to the glove compartment. Big smile; my order was in within an hour.
It has met all my expectations. The face recognition, image stabilization, and redeye control are all feature upgrades that I really appreciate. Whether I am using my new main camera (the 590IS) or the emergency keep-in-the-car camera, I have the same computer cable and software for uploads, and a very similar menu system -- don't need to re-learn everything or keep my fingers trained to two interfaces.
The picture quality is what I've come to expect from Canon. You don't want comments about picture quality. It should just happen right all the time. And the only comment I've gotten was from a friend whose picture I had just taken. "It's TOO good! You can tell how long it is since I shaved. You can count every whisker."
BTW, I have been into photography since 1951. I went through a Rolleiflex and then several good film SLRs. There is almost nothing that they did that this camera cannot do. Yes, DSLRs can do a little more yet, but you pay a price in mobility and -- well, price. I was looking over one of my SLR gadget bags (camera, several lenses, film, etc), and comparing the weight and bulk to my A590 "bag" -- a cell phone case just big enough for the camera and a few replacement AA cells; it fits in my pants pocket.
My only gripe: We used it recently for passport photos. (Not every photo needs to be art.) I tried to do it with the self-timer. Apparently, face-recognition focus freezes when you start the timer; I would walk into the frame with the timer beeping, and it would not refocus on me.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, compatible with my a520
Cons: doesn't adjust focus while self-timing

Best Little Camera Ever!

This is one of the best investments I've bought. I LOVE this camera! It's small enough and light enough to carry, Fits in a handbag easily, has video on it, has many scenic features. I use a lithium battery so that's not a problem at all. The only downfall is if you're taking a scenic pic at night. I've been to concerts and have to zoom in on the entertainer and it's hard to hold steady zoomed in and if you move at all, it streaks the lights. Other than that, I'm extremely happy with it. Very easy to use.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, durable, easy to carry
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance
