Outstanding Camera

I just got my canon a590 today about two hours ago and I tested my camera. I was around with the settings and learning all the features on it and I was shocked by the features. One of my favorite features is the MF-Point Zoom which allows you to focus on an object maunally and at the same time on the LCD screen it shows u a close up detail of the object to make sure you are perfectly focused. The flash is great. I took a photo of my books from about 4 feet away and with normal flash and it came out kinda overexposed. Then I lowered the flash setting, took photos of my books again and the photo came out perfectly exposed. Outstanding image quality. I also have a Canon EOS-30 and this compact camera takes photos just as good as my professional camera, not to mention that this compact camera is WAY better in low light setting than my professional camera (without any flash light). The Canon A590 is like a mini SLR Camera. Only downturn is the flash takes a while and the batteries die quickly, but you can fix that by buying high quality rechargeable batteries. Cheap, great, and worth every dollar. BUY IT!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, durable, great manual focus feature, adjustable flash light (high flash or low flash)
Cons: Short battery life, flash is slow

great valve

I've owned more than 10 digital cameras since 1996 and this is one of the best. I started using it right out of box with no problems. I have a DSLR but I wanted a small camera I could put in my pocket and carry but still take great pictures and it fits the bill. For those who complained about the short battery life I used regular alkalines and took 214 flash pictures before the low level alarm came on. My suggestion is to buy rechargeables batteries.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Everything I expected

I use my camera primarily for taking pictures while hiking. I had previously owned an A550 which was lost somewhere in the snow on Mt Liberty NH, so I had a good idea what the A590 would be like and I have not been disappointed.
Some have complained that the A590 is too bulky to fit in a shirt pocket, but that is the last place I would want it when hiking. It is compact enough to fit in a small case, yet it fits perfectly in one hand and makes it possible to get shots with one hand while holding other equipment in the other hand.
Personally, I would not purchase a camera without an optical view finder. It is far too difficult to compose a picture with the LCD screen in bright sunlight on top of a mountain.
I appreciate the many manual options and use them from time to time when photographing at home or in more relaxed situations. When hiking I generally rely on 'auto' and do the touch up work on the computer at home.
The camera provides good battery life and uses AA batteries which is a big plus. It delivers crisp sharp images that can be printed on 8 by 10 paper with very good results.
The 4x zoom is also a big plus and covers most of the range I need when hiking.
The IS is also a plus when making one handed grab shots. It as saved a lot of pictures I would have lost with my A550.
All in all I think the A590 is the perfect camera for my needs.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Exceptional Value

I use the A590 IS for work and take on average 700 to 1,000 photos weekly. My inspection business relies heavily on quality photos for my client reports. I have used two Canon A series cameras: an A540 and the A590 IS. Both have performed well beyond my expectations. I still have the A540 and keep it as a backup. The reason I purchased a new camera was the A540 lens cover sometimes sticks half way closed. A good cleaning would cure the problem except that the repair fee is more than the replacement cost. I can squeeze close to 400 photos out of a set of 2500 mAhr NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeable batteries. I take my camera into attics, crawl spaces and basements and they take a lot of abuse. I use each camera for about two years and I will definitely buy another Canon.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

It really is a best buy

After doing some on-line research, I bought this camera as a gift for my boyfriend right before a vacation to Paris. He loves it and feels that it is very user friendly (What a relief!). Consider that a major complement to Canon since he's not the most technologically minded person in the world. Zoom was great to photograph the architecture and everyone who viewed our photos asked what kind of camera we had. We found the battery life was enhanced using the lithium batteries over the regular AA's so I definitely recommend the more expensive batteries and it will probably save you $$ in the long run. I think we only changed the batteries once in the eight day trip and we were constantly viewing the pictures every night. There were only a few occasions in very dark light where pictures did not turn out as we had hoped. Being novice users though, there may be additional settings to overcome these problems. I would definitely recommend the camera to a friend. The only downside is its slighly bulky appearance.
Pros: Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, good battery life

I bought this camera because Consumer Reports rated it a best buy, but had some fears having read complaints about noise, short battery life etc. I have had it for over two months now and have not encountered any problems. It is easy to use, the noise level its very reasonable and picture quality is great. The delay on the first picture could be improved, but otherwise (for me) it's perfect.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable

This is the best camera I have owned and I have been into photography for 40 years. This camera has superior fuctions, picture quality, and fun to own. Pleaase bring it back so others can enjoy one of the BEST cameras on the market.

Perfect companion to DSLR

My primary camera is the Rebel XSi digital SLR. The PowerShot A590 IS is a perfect companion camera with every feature I could want.
If I want to get createive with it I can use the full manual settings, my wife can use the Easy mode to take great pictures without having to worry about all the features and settings and it's inexpensive enough that I don't have to worry about my daughter taking it on a trip out of the country.
Its size is a perfect compromise. It's not quite as small as the shirt-pocket sized Elph cameras, but still easy to take along wherever you go to capture those spontaneous snapshots and it has all the features you want when you're going somewhere to take serious pictures.
Alkaline batteries will run out pretty fast. If you plan on taking a lot of pictures, get good quality 2500mAh rechargeable AA's. If you aren't using it that often, spring for the Lithium disposable batteries which have a high capacity and a long shelf life.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: slow flash recycle time
