Image Stabilizatiion Is Not Good
on November 27, 2008

I bought this camera yesterday and returned it today. The features it offers are positively great but the image stabilization and its ability to capture moving people or animals is horrible. I take a lot of "action" shots (which is what I love about digital cameras) and even in the "action" mode, the images are completely blurry. Plus, the person taking the picture MUST be 100% still or the photo will be blurry. I was very excited to purchase this camera after researching it on line and getting a high recommendation from my 82 year old mother. However, I was VERY upset that it didn't take good action shots at all. You may be thinking that I just needed to change the mode, however, I did that as I spent about 3 hours reading the entire users manual. If the camera is mounted on a tripod, the photo's would probably be fine, however, how many people actually use tripod's for casual photo's?
Pros: Bright LCD
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not impressed

I bought this camera to use for travel snap shots when I was unable or unwilling to carry my digital SLR and because the price was great for all the listed features. Normally I'm a huge Canon fan, but I have to say this camera has been a disappointment. I thought I would be able to use the program settings to take decent images when the automatic setting had difficulty (low light, spot-metering and spot-focus, bumping up the f-stops to control the light, etc.), but I have yet to get the camera to take a good shot even in automatic mode in bright daylight! The focus at any distance beyond ten feet is horrible no matter if you use the landscape setting, the normal setting, or any other setting. I really think it's the quality of the sensor that is a problem. Even a small sensor at 8 MP should take decent landscape shots! Or for that matter, in close-up mode it battles you take a decent photo. It's awkward to thumb through the menus and change image settings while shooting. In fact, it's really only of use to me for a quick video to record a moment (and it's a small format, so you'd be better off buying a video camera if that is what you want). I bought one for a family member at the same time I got mine, and hers does the same things, so it's not simply one malfunctioning model. Too bad, it could have been a great combination of features in a nice-sized camera (and one of the few that still takes AA batteries).
Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Difficult to use, Poor image quality, Poor Low-Light Performance
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

CANON CAMERAS ARE AMAZING

STARTED OUT BY PUTTING AN A650 ON LAY A WAY IN A PAWN SHOP. A FEW WEEKS LATER I FOUND THE A590 AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT FOR A BARGAIN. SURPRISED THAT AFTER SEVERAL YEARS THIS CAMERA IS STILL HIGHLY RATED IN THE CONSUMERS REPORTS MAGAZINE. ONLY PROBLEM I DID NOT GET THE MANUAL AND HAD TO DOWN LOAD AND PRINT IT. I AM STILL LEARNING ABOUT ALL THE FEATURES. MY RATINGS ARE MADE IN ADVANCE. I KNOW I WILL LOVE THIS CAMERA.
Pros: Nice features/settings
I would recommend this to a friend!

Up and Died

I've owned many Canon products and have been satisfied. However, this is the second Canon digital to fail.
The first lasted a year or so. When I turned it on, the pictures on the memory card would show up, but the LCD screen was blank when I tried to take pictures.
I bought another, thinking that I just had a lemon.
Same thing with this one. It just stopped working. Thankfully, I have all the shots on a memory card, but I'll have to use the card in another camera.
I'm re-thinking my favorable opinion of Canon after two bad experiences.
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: don't last

Viewfinder
on April 17, 2009

I was so glad to find a camera with a viewfinder, BUT the viewfinder image is not the same as the picture the camera takes. The screen broke when I plugged it into my computer so the only way to take pix was with the viewfinder, but it's not accurate. That is frustrating. The price is good, but you may have to buy more than one camera.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: Poor image quality, Flimsy Construction, screen broke easily

Disappointment

WARNING: This model does NOT support the Remote Shooting Function. The only use for the USB cord is transferring photos -- not controlling the camera or its settings. (Guess I didn't read the fine print....)
Pros: fairly good manual.
Cons: no computer control.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The instructions for downloading to a MAC are pitiful. It's a circular argument.

Cons: Difficult to use, Complicated controls/menu, Missing features/settings, Short battery life, very complicated manual!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
