Love this P&S

I purchased my camera in February of this year (2009) to replace a hand-me-down digital. I researched the camera to see if there was something within my limited budget that had any of the features I had on my old 35mm.
Although I've used the automatic settings, with great success, I generally keep this camera in M mode, where I have the greatest control. I'm in no rush to upgrade to a DSLR. With a tripod, and a little patience, I can take incredible pictures. There've been some misses, but mostly, I've had hits with this camera.
I've even found several other A590 enthusiasts in the online photographic community.
The biggest issue I have is the battery indicator. It starts flashing very early on, and doesn't give an accurate indication of just how much life the batteries have. Using the proper batteries can make all the difference.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought this because I wanted a inexpensive camera to take around everywhere that my SLR couldnt. I couldnt be more pleased with my choice. If you know anything about how to take a picture you can take great shots with this thing. In my opinion, it performs like cameras that cost more than double. My buddy has a Canon D40 and he said I took better shots than him haha. (I dont know about that but you get the point. ) Long story short...everyone who sees the shots that I take with this thing is very impressed. If you are looking for a camera and you want great pics and a GREAT deal...this is it. Love this camera...Im a Canon guy for life now.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, amazing value
Cons: Short battery life

I helped my daughter pick out this camera when she was looking for high quality, full control, and a low price. We could not be happier. She easily uses it in Manual. I recommended it to a friend and they are thrilled. I then suggested it to students in a photography class I started teaching. Sure I'd love for them to all have DSLR's and a collection of lenses and accessories. But I knew they wanted to stay low in price. I think 6 or more bought this camera.
IQ is excellent. Control relatively easy. Build pretty good. Price outstanding!

battery issues

The camera offers a lot for the money, particularly by having many manual features available, ie, all the basics, and readily accessed. The video mode works quite well, the main downside is that there is no zoom function - you have to set the lens and then shoot. As with most cameras with built-in mikes, you need to place some foam over the mike when there's any breeze. A rubber band works as a retainer.
The first camera worked well for a year, then the video mode lost focus capability. I managed to find another at a good price, as it is now a discontinued model.
Both cameras now have a serious problem regarding batteries. Apparently the voltage sensor drifts with age, and even the alkaline's higher voltage will not give much use before you are required to change batteries. Batteries removed always measure well charged on a tester. Canon needs to modify the firmware so that the low battery feature can be turned off.
Both the problems I have had seem to be quality issues, and have put me off buying anything Canon again.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, video mode lost focus after a year
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Easy to manipulate and understand settings. Rechargable batteries are a must though.

This A590IS does great Black & White! (once you've converted the files in an editing program)
My old A540 they came out flat...
The 8x10's look like something from the 1940's and 50's!
The full Manual Control option is a huge plus!
Pros: easy to use, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
I would recommend this to a friend!

I love this camera. I got it for Christmas of last year and haven't put it down since. I've had two digital cameras since this one and it's by far the best. I love the black and white quality! I take many black and white photos and I love how it turns out. The only down-side is the short battery life. Luckily, I got rechargeable batteries. (I recommend them if you have this camera)
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, durable, great focus
Cons: Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

I purchased it when it first came out and was so happy and still am happy with the quality of the camera and the quality of the photos. I have dropped it two times and scraped it real badly on a tripod and it works as good as new. I have taken many pictures with it and all have turned out great.
Pros: great zoom, fast image stabilizer, big resolution, starts really fast, very low battery usage, different color, manual options, low price, good in low light
Cons: big compact, slow zoom, have to buy new batteries
I would recommend this to a friend!
