Accessible, but not designed for tall items

I went from a 15 year old regular fridge/freezer with ice maker to this new ADA inspired fridge/freezer with ice maker. I prefer the old one. I always have 1 or 2 pitchers of beverages in the fridge, but my pitchers would not fit on a glass shelf until I took out one of the shelves- the shelves are too closely vertically placed. The door shelves are also too closely vertically placed. I was able to use the top door shelf for pitchers, by taking off the butter tray. The door shelves would be a lot more useful if the width of the door was taken up by 2 removable shelves, instead of just one- then one of the shelves could be removed, allowing for a tall object to be placed on the shelf below. The ice maker has a high-pitched squeaky noise when it fills with water, kind of like the noise that can be made from the neck of a balloon. The printed info says to allow 24 hours of ice making before using the ice- I recommend 2 or 3 days, to get more of the plastic taste out of the ice. The freezer is roomy, and will hold a lot of stuff.

The freezer door does close properly and the icemaker is slow and has a small capacity.

Freezer/Ice maker problems
on November 12, 2015

Ice forms on rear wall of freezer; ice maker overflows and clumps half of cubes into one chunk; meat drawer is too shallow; no good spot for tall items (pitchers, for example); freezer rack is flimsy and runs entire width, limiting top half of freezer's usable space. Very basic product, so if you just need lots of space with few features, you might be ok. Glad that it has easy-clean shelving in refrig compartment. Have had unit about 3 weeks.

The size of the refrigerator works great for my family. Ice maker is a little noise but works good.

Nice size/layout, but noisy, finicky & over-priced

4 months ownership and counting, and so far we are pleased with our GIE21GTHWW. (we bought the ice-maker too; can't remember the full model #) We were drawn to this fridge due to its size/layout and its claimed energy-efficiency. Not sure if its truly as efficient as claimed yet, but we do like it.
Pros: Wonderful fridge layout/dimensions inside. Long shelves in door allow lots of storage, bottom door shelf even fits full wine bottles! Top shelf in fridge can hold at least a half dozen gallons of milk! Veggie/fruit bins are large & deep. Plastic parts and general interior are not as sturdy as our 20 yr. old fridge, but they are better quality parts than almost any other new fridge we shopped for (of the top-freezer type).
Cons: This fridge is LOUD - about as noisy as a microwave cooking food - and far louder than our 20 yr. old fridge. With the energy-efficient (i.e. wimpy) compressor and no separate freezer temp. controls, great care is needed in not overloading the freezer (must allow plenty of airflow). If the freezer is too full, the fridge constantly runs which freezes our milk, etc. Price is rather steep for a top-freezer fridge model, but the size/layout definitely seems worth it once we realized how smartly the space inside is designed.
3.5 stars out of 5.

Poor interior design

Not enough shelf adjustments. Once you adjust top shelf for gallon jugs of milk and two-liter soda bottles you essentially loose one of the three shelves (3 rd shelf soo small you can't put much of anything on it). No light in freezer like our old Kenmore. It was also was delivered with a big scratch down the front of the for.

Short interior refrigerator area

In order to get anything out of the refrigerator-part of the appliance, I need to bend over and reach in (I am only 5'2'' tall) because the freezer-part dips so deep into the refrigerator part of the appliance. Also, the vegetable bins at the bottom are very large and take up MORE space from the "refrigerator" area. Lastly, the shelf going over from the meat tender drawer goes all the way over to the opposite wall of the refrigerator which means you can't put any tall things on any of the unmoveable shelves, like a defrosting turkey or a couple of bottles of wine.
