Finally dual sided copying!

I have owned the Epson Artisan 800 and various older Epson printers for many years. I have been patiently waiting for Epson to make an equivalent printer to the Artisan series but with a duplexing ADF so that dual sided documents could be easily copied.
After literally 3+ years, Epson has finally done it with the Expression Photo XP-850. It retains all of the features of the Artisan series, and adds duplex ADF (automatic document feeder) and several "cloud printing" features. For example, you can e-mail a photo to your printer's special e-mail address and have it printed. Fortunately, you can change the e-mail address from a machine-generated one to something easier to remember. This is great!
Another nice feature is that you no longer have to manually extend the output tray -- it will automatically come out. However, you have to manually push it back in if you want to put it back. Upon reflection, I suppose it wouldn't be good if the tray retracted on its own with a printout not picked up.
The CD tray is a separate tray like on some of the older Epson printers. You have to manually feed the tray into the printer and line up little arrows to make sure everything is lined up. It is not as elegant as on the Artisan series where it was an integrated part of the printer.
One minor nit is that the printer software CD didn't support Windows 8. This wouldn't be a problem except that the version on Epson's website is missing the Abbeyy FineReader OCR software. Odd since this printer was released after the release of Windows 8.
The printouts look excellent with the proper Epson paper, although I found text to be a little smeared, although it's barely noticeable. Epson is generous and provides two sheets of photo paper to try out.
The printer also requires a bit of space on the right hand side of the printer (4 inches) if you want to use the ADF with legal size paper.
One oddity about the ink cartridges -- they include a cap that you are supposed to use when removing the cartridges from the printer. Epson includes a little plastic Ziploc bag to store the caps in.
The print alignment is still a manual process. The printer will print out an alignment sheet, and then the user must choose which image is the best aligned of four choices. Choosing can be a bit difficult if you don't have good eyesight as the images are quite similar. Other printer vendors use an automated approach where it prints out an alignment sheet, which is subsequently scanned to determine the proper alignment automatically.
Overall, I'm very happy with this printer so far. It's fast, doesn't take up much room, and loaded with features.

THIS PRINTER IS AN INK CARTRIDGE BLACKHOLE!!

My wife and I were in the market for a new printer, did our research and came to the conclusion that the XP-850 would serve our purposes. After the initial ink cartridges were used up, we purchased Epson replacement cartridges and quickly discovered that we had stumbled into an ink cartridge blackhole. Once replaced, different cartridges began to print incomplete lines when we ran nozzle checks. After cleaning the heads a number of times, the ink cartridges were depleted and needed to be replaced which caused the heads to need cleaning again. At the moment, we seem to be trapped in a causation loop as cartridge replacement requires head cleaning and head cleaning requires additional cartridge replacement. At this point, we are hoping that Epson will, at the very least, do the right thing and replace our printer or offer us a full refund.

Great Printer with an Annoying Flaw

Basically with any EPSON Printer, it prints well, you can connect to them wirelessly and it works like a charm. My only issue with them is ink. You cannot print if the ink is low. Nothing. You can't print in color if there is no black ink, and you can't print in black unless all the color inks are filled (even if you're not even printing in color). Also, they print pages perfectly and then the error shows up, "You need to replace your ink cartridge." Well, clearly I don't because the paper is printing just fine. Also, when I take the cartridge out, why is ink dripping all over my arm if it's "empty." Why don't you let us dictate when to replace the ink cartridge instead of ripping us off by trying to sell us more ink?
It wouldn't be that big of a deal but the ink doesn't last very long at all. Like I said, it's an annoyance rather than a functional issue.

My old Artisan 810 was giving me a lot of trouble with colors missing so I decided to buy a new Epson. Since the Artisan was no longer available I settled on the XP-850. It had all the features and more that the Artisan had with the addition of manual rear paper feed and double sided scanning. The footprint of the XP-850 is smaller tan the 810 and it is lighter. It installed on my Windows 7 64 bit system without any problems. I was up and running within 30 min. I guess my only concern may be the cartridge size. All in all a great little printer.

GREAT PRINTER BUT THE INK IS NOT YET READILY AVAILABLE AT THE LOCAL OFFICE STORES. I PURCHASED THIS PRINTER TO PRINT ON DVDs. BUT IT ALSO PRINTS REALLY GOOD PHOTOS. ALSO, THE SINGLE LOAD COPIER IS LIKE RUNNING WITH THE BIG BOYS COPIER. AND, I AM REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE WI FI AND THE USB CAPABILITY. THANKS, EPSON FOR SUCH A GREAT PRINTER BUT CAN YOU DO SOMETING ABOUT THE HIGH PRICE OF THE INK.

Wasn't what I expected from Epson

My old Epson Photo Stylus printer stop working after many years. So I ordered the XP-850. I didn't even use it. It was too small, the paper trays were in a ridiculously difficult to access and the entire quality of the parts used to build this photo printer was flimsy. I went to a local office supply to see it and the sales person had a hard time even lifting the paper support piece. He ended up pulling it off and breaking. I shipped it back and bought a Work Force all-in-one that accepts larger paper size which is good for my artwork.

This printer does not get accurate color, especially black, gray and green in photos. Photos otherwise sharp and bright. A shame Epson can't get this problem fixed. Otherwise good printer for home office.
