Love the product but dislike Epson's constant reminder that I am not using "official Epson ink." As with most printer manufacturers, Epson wants to capture all business but does not have a price competitive ink product. Remove the automatic notification. I know that I bought non Epson ink but I also know that at 50% of Epson cost, it has worked well for the entire year that I've owned the printer.

Great printer, paper capacity too small

I was looking to buy an all-in-one printer that included CD printing and AirPrint. I was surprised how hard it was to find for any brand. This printer does it all. There is a rear slot for card stock. Which is a nice feature because my Artisan 810 didn't do card stock well (paper would jam). Tray 1 is for 4x6 or 5x7 photo paper only. Tray 2 is for regular paper up to legal-size. My only disappointment is the paper capacity in Tray 2, which is about 50. Significantly less than what I had with my previous Artison 810. The wireless network setup worked fine. To print on a CD you have to pull out a separate tray from the bottom, load the CD and then insert it into a slot above Tray 1. Scanning works fine within PhotoShop (after I ran the Epson Navigaror and Event Manager). Copying works fine but sometimes it takes the printer several minutes to warm up if I haven't used in awhile.

This One's a Lemon...Steer Clear

I've bought Epson printers for many years. I am a professional artist and use the printer quite a bit so I tend to run through them. When my Artisan printer died, this looked like a comparable model. Same line of inks (Claria), same number of cartridges.
Problems started the first time I changed ink cartridges. I had to clean heads 4 times before it worked again. One cartridge would need cleaning but, when I'd clean the heads, that one would be OK, but another one would suddenly need cleaning.
Whenever I put in a new cartridge, I never know if it's going to work. It says it installs correctly but then there's no ink that comes out.
And, to top it all off, it doesn't print right. Some of my prints have thin white lines going across and no amount of head cleaning will fix it.

Overall the printer is nice. Prints good quality photos and text. I will say that I like the new auto paper tray because I like to keep it closed so dust and other debris Dosn't get into it when not being used. The rear paper feed is convenient but I do wish it could do more than 1 sheet at a time. Also the app on apple Dosn't allow you to use it at will. Only the PC software does. I also like the stationary ink setup on the artisan better than the one on the head. I think creating a removable head would be the best thing to do for another option. That way you can work with it if there are problems or clogs. The waste ink absorbers should be bigger. More accessible to remove than the way they are know. When printing two sided lined paper it should allow duplex And how dark you want the lines. Over all the printer works good but there is always room for improvement. Also I have noticed over the years with epson printers they always seem to print photos darker than they are. I also own canon and they are almost perfect color match. The epsons are not perfect but they are a very impressive machine. They do a lot for a smaller printer size. And the ink prices for oem ink should come down. I have been using aftermarket ink for over 8 years know and it costs nothing to print and the photos come out better. The oem ink isn't as great as you would think. You do have to get good ink not any ink is good. Well that's it for know. Thanks for reading hope it helped someone. I am a very knowledgable person when it comes to printer have a lot of different ones and compare them all to each other.

Troubles

The first problem I had with the XP-850 was that I had to clean the heads close to 20 time before I was able to get close to proper test result and then more to get semi clean picture. Now the printer keeps having trouble recognizing the ink cartridges that we sent with it. So nothing but problems, after great perfomance with the Artisan 800, Al Wheeler

I really love my Epson printer! I love the quality of the photo's it prints. I love color quality that comes out on all my printing. The quality of the greeting card I designed for a friend's birthday was better than any store bought card. I love the quality of all of my general printing. I like that I can print on CD's and the Print CD software is easy to use. I like that the scanner and copier produce good quality and are easy to use.
However, in the 3 months I have owned my XP-850, I have primarily used it for general printing, but when I print photos on it, the print heads get clogged and when I run the maintenance tools to clear the clogs, about half of a cartridge of ink gets consumed. That means I run out of ink very quickly when I print photos (and yes, I understand - it's obvious - that photos consume more ink too!). That gets expensive and so far I have not found a local store that sells the XL ink. I only know of one local store that even sells the 277 ink.
Due to finances and space in my home, I cannot keep a back stock of ink and if I need to run the utilities, I will need to replace the ink cartridges within 2 days.
Overall, I really love my Epson printer and I am really enjoying it. I accept that there are very few things in this world that are perfect, so the bottom line is the XP-850 is really good. It meets my very high color and quality standards, but having to replace all of my ink cartridges twice in 2 months seems like too much when I consider that I really do not print such a high quantity and I am finding that the "every day" print quality or even "draft" are fine for the majority of my printing needs.

Prints great when it works

I love the quality of the printing, but I am NOT impressed with the quality of the printer itself. I use this printer to print large 8x10 photographs and am impressed with the quality of the photos, but often times the printer just stops working correctly. I have had to turn in this model for warranty replacement several times now. The print heads get clogged and cleaning them only uses up a LOT of expensive ink and a lot of times just makes the problem worse. The only remedy I have had after going through two complete sets of ink trying to clean the print heads is to get a replacement printer. This is frustrating because that is down time without a printer and the fact that there is only a one year warranty on the printer means the next time this happens (and I am sure it will because it has happened several times now) I will be out of warranty.

Used mainly as a photo printer

I have used this printer extensively for about 3 weeks now. I print mostly only pictures on this printer. It is good but the photo tray does not hold very many sheets for someone who prints a lot of photos. Also, sometimes it takes it longer to pick up the next photo paper than to actually print the photo. A plus is that I am printing in default settings and getting beautiful pictures. It is noisy when taking a long time to pick up the next photo paper. It makes all kinds of weird noises, so mechanical that I wonder how long these plastic parts will last. The trays are made with cheap plastic.
