I use this unit mostly for printing photos and copying photos. It does great at both tasks. Because it has it's own screen, it can be used in stand-alone mode, but I still have the computer hooked up to it in case I want to copy something interesting from the computer. Photos can be printed in any sheet size.

i this is my fourth epson printer and they have always been a great printer. my last printer RX700 i had for 7yrs never had a problem. still works but replaced it because the only place to get ink is from epson tried of paying for shipping. i reset the counter twice on that printer and still printed a great photo. this new XP-850 i have had just over a month and have printed maybe 50 pages on mixed text/image setting or lower and 5 4x6 photos today i went to print a 8x10 photo and the color was not right and got a cartrige lower warning. tried again and photo was even worst and printer now gave me a out of ink warning. so changed cartrige and tried again this time had lines through the photo and 2 more cartriges out of ink so changed them. ran maintenance to check alignment and the yellow and cyan were almost completely not working so ran clean head, checked again little better, tried to run cleaning again got 2 more cartriges needed to be changed out so that the 6th color was also very low figured change all of the last 3 cartriges. ran the cleaning 2 more times before got the full yellow and cyan working and now the magenta isn't 100% good. i checked ink levels and now the first 3 cartrige colors are already showing 50% gone. i never had a problem with my last printer.

XP-850

I just unpacked and installed this new all-in-one printer. It replaced a competing All-In-One brand that broke (just after I bought more ink) and I have an older Epson R340 so I decided to give a try to the XP-850.
I do a lot of printing on CD/DVD which is why I bought the XP-850. My main criticism so far is the manual that came with the XP-850 does not have one word, picture or description on how to load the CD/DVD Tray. I had to go to the Epson site to read the help to see how it works.
My other complaint (resulting in 4 stars) is the output tray. When a sheet is printed the panel swings up and the output tray extends out, but you have to push the tray back in and it feels like I might strip the plastic gears. If the motor can slide the output tray out, it seems like it could retract the tray too. I wish there were a firmware update that would allow the tray to be retracted by the motor.

Uses ink +wastes paper&ink when changing cartridge

First of all I love Epson printers. I have had 2 in my past and both have been great printers for me. I bought this printer about 4 months ago. I had read it uses ink but never thought it could be that bad. We had done basic non color printing up until last week, when I had a project to print several DVD's and dvd cases (8 1/2 11 sheets of photo paper). My previous printer (Epson rx680) would use about a cartridge of each color on these jobs, so I decided to buy the XL ink packages. I printed most of my dvd's last week then ran out, so had to wait until the new XL ink arrived. It came tonight and I put the first color in that needed replacing. Printed 2 sheets and the colors were all green. Canceled job. Did a cleaning and checked. Seemed ok. Printed another page and it needed another color replaced. Did that. Colors were off again. This pattern happened on all colors until all but black were replaced. Then black would not print at all. My nozzle check showed all colors but black! I wonder now if black had stopped after the first ink replacement and I did not know it. Should have seen it in the nozzle check but maybe didn't pay attention to that missing. So I downloaded the newest firmware as I had no other option. That seemed to fix it!
I started printing my dvd cases (25 copies) and I am watching my XL ink drain. Most of the case is black so I figured black would go fast. Nope. LC and LM are the winners right now, and I am at 10 copies thus far! That is really really poor! XL should last much longer than this. I cannot compare it to my old printer as far a longevity of ink as I have not printed this case on that printer. But my opinion is this printer is really taking some ink use.
Shame shame shame, but I am stuck now so not really sure what can improve ink use. I would not recommend this printer.

Disappointing

This is my first Epson printer after 20 years with another manufacturer. I bought the printer primarily for printing color graphics and have not been impressed. The color is frequently less than vibrant. For everything else, the printer is fine and the scanner and associated software works very well.

Uses excessive ink/something wrong in design

Epson has replaced the original unit twice and the problems of clogging heads, streaks, and excessive ink usage persist. I have used Epson inks and papers exclusively. It is very frustrating to insert an XL ink cartridge only to have it depleted after a few prints and eight cleaning cycles required to get those few prints.

Disappointed thinking about returning it

I got the printer a few days ago. I am disappointed in it. I mainly bought it for the direct to DVD/CD printing. I don't care about any of the other features. I don't like the removable DVD tray. It is a pain to have to put it in and take it out all of the time. I planned on using this printer to print a lot of DVDs. A friend of mine had an older model. It may be the Epson Artisan 837, which had the DVD tray right in the printer with no need to insert the tray or take it out. We have another Epson 7520 that we absolutely love.
