Great camera! I take photos as an amateur photographer almost daily, and I must admit, I like the quality of this camera as much as my 35mm Nikon, and it's so much more convenient to use. Small. lightweight, just wish I could find the Waterproof Casing for it!
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, portable, good battery life
Cons: Heavy or bulky
I would recommend this to a friend!

G9 really fits the bill

I've had my G9 for about 7 months now and I'm glad I made the purchase. I had been looking for a small companion camera to my EOS XTi that would be full featured and able to give me excellent image quality. The G9 is all that and more. The control layout is logical (for me at least) and an intuitive follow-on from the XTi. The combination of 4-way controller and dial is top-notch. The function menu contains exactly the items I most need access to. This is a photographer's camera. I prefer a camera with a viewfinder for times when the LCD isn't really visible and the G9's is quite adequate. I find it easy to compensate for the fact that the viewfinder is above the lens when aiming the camera and it doesn't matter to me that it doesn't show the entire image. I wear glasses all the time, have for over 40 years, and I'm quite used to viewfinders and their compromises. The diopter adjustment on the eyepiece is a nice touch indeed. You don't find those on as many cameras as I would like these days. Using the G9 is a real treat and it definitely adds to my enjoyment of this hobby.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, portable, good battery life, durable, same battery as my xti, compatible with ex speedlites, color swap and spot color features
Cons: a bit slow shot-to-shot when using raw format, menu's a bit slow to navigate, iso above 400 not especially useful due to noise, canon's dpp software doesn't support g9 raw files

Great Camera

I have had the G9 for over a year now and I can't say anything but great things about it. I've really enjoyed learning the art of photography with this camera. Before I bought the G9 I was looking around for a SLR but the G9 was a great compromise between a SLR and a powershot; aswell as the price.
Pros: picture quality, light weight
Cons: manual is a bit confusing

Excellent camera with vry good features. Takes superb photos and can only improve as I learn to use all the features of the camera. It is very good value for money and the end product is hard to fault. Like most instruction manuals, the canon G9 is full of detailed information, but not easy to follow. It could be more "user friendly" Overall, I am very satisfied.
Pros: comfortable camera to use, excellent photographs
Cons: complicated user manual

Pretty good, but far from perfect

Have had the G9 for a bit over 16 months by now. due to its size, I do not use it as much as I should (with a similarly rugged camera in smaller package). Still not worked through all the controls, some pretty confusing. ISO control wheel is in a bad spot since it easily twists when pulling camera out of a tight bag (tight bag in order to keep size down), or just having it on the stomach in a sling. This has been fixed on the G10 though.
Camera LOOKS good, really great classic design, and picture quality is for the _most part_ excellent - as long as you turn off auto-ISO and stay on ISO at 200 or less. As others stated, higher ISO just renders horrible noise. I wish Canon would have kept MP down to 8 or 10 instead of jumping on the totally unnecessary MP race, or gone to a larger sensor. High MP on small sensor just does not work... that proof can be seen in one of my old 2.1 MP S330s, which actually can challenge the G9 in certain situations. As always, Canon has a great color balance, but there is as with almost all digicams issues when you have very high contrast in the pictures (like snow and shadow).
Battery life is as good as one could expect. An added lock on the lid would be neat (like on the A720 IS), but have not lost anything yet. Always concerned when getting water droplets or (melting) snow on the extended lens but no problems resulting from that so far.
Controls are easy in "mostly" auto mode, but it IF you want to make adjustments, it takes time due to the wheel and menu design. NOTE, this is no worse than similar cameras of same caliber, just not as good as it COULD be. Why is it that the engineers always gets away with too much "features" at the cost of "good design"?
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life, durable
Cons: Difficult to use, Complicated controls/menu, Poor Low-Light Performance, Heavy/Bulky

I have owned this camera for about a year and it is amazing. It has all the bells and whistles a SLR does without the bulky size. Strongly recommended for the SLR uses that are looking for a more portable option.
Pros: small size, amazing zoom

I love the camera. Only thing left out is a remote. Not easy shooting on a tripod without a remote.

Cons: Missing features/settings
