Great with some exceptions

I have scanned more than 4,000 slides, negatives and photos. Quality is very accurate, even with aging albums and glued pictures. Slides at reasonable resolution are slow. Six-up paper photos scan separately with a single scan - place, preview, scan. The cover is heavy and won't stay in place when open - a nuisance. The film guides slide about and are fussy to handle. The supplied software, MP Navigator slows down on big jobs: need to restart every 50 photos or so. The automatic multi-scan capability is great - but, when necessary, manually making multiple selections is tedious and it scans in reverse order of selection - select last then first to retain first-last order. The automatic filters slow down performance. Use iPhoto or Photoshop for better result and performance.
Pros: Compact Design, easy to use, Fast Connectivity, High resolution
Cons: software is buggy.

What did I do without my scanner

I bought my CanoScan to scan my hundreds of old 35mm slides. It was just awesome to see these slides scanned into photos. I do a lot of scanning of photos and also recipes. This scanner is so easy to operate. I even take it with me to visit out-of-state relatives when I'm working on a slideshow project, and even scan photos for relatives while I am visiting. It's impressive finding out what this scanner can do. It has been the greatest investment I have made.
Pros: Compact Design, durable, easy to use, High-speed scanning, Fast Connectivity, High resolution

Great product

I was looking for a scanner to digitize several thousand old slides and negatives. I tried one simple, cheap scanner, with predictably terrible results. The CanoScan 8800F seemed like a good compromise between speed, quality and cost, so I bought it. So far I have done around a thousand slides, plus many black and white and color negatives, all with fine results. I am using 1200 dpi resolution for the most part, which results in an average time per slide of around 40-45 seconds, not including editing and file management. If finer resolution is needed you can go to higher and higher resolution, with correspondingly longer scan times. The color reproduction is very good. I am using Photoshop Elements 5.0 for any necessary color or exposure correction and cropping. Canon includes a copy of Photoshop Elements in the box with the scanner. The main thing I don't like is that the only manual included is a CD. I really MUCH prefer a paper manual, and I found the lack of clear, easily accessible instructional information to be a real issue at the start, but after fooling around a while it all came together. I am quite pleased with the results so far. The 8800F is a good value.

This is an outstanding product and am very pleased with my purchase. The scanner is perfect in every way. I do wish however that I could scan other negative sizes. Yes..., I have 110 and 126 negatives and wish I could scan them also. :)
Pros: very fast!, color is great!, very easy to use!
Cons: wish i had more negative size scan options

Have tons of old slides to digitize. Am now almost halfway through; have been at it, off and on, for 4 months. Scanner came with Photoshop Elements which helps clean up images that are starting to go bad.
Pros: can adjust resolutions as desired., does negative film equally well
Cons: would like it to be a little faster in operation.

I had used a Canon scanner, with excellent results, for several years, but the negative attachment suddenly stopped working. After reading reviews on several scanners, I went ahead and ordered the more expensive 8800F. I'm mostly satisfied, although this scanner's quality is not as reliable as my old LIDE 600F. I also had difficulty installing it on my computer, but the installation worked the second time. The scanner sometimes does not produce superior quality. On some negative strips, the picture will be off-centered and the color dull and faded. On a second try, it usually comes out right. Another problem I have had is that sometimes streaks show up in the pictures. These are not on the negatives, because on different attempts, the streaks will be in different places. It is a great waste of time having to do the same negative until you get a picture without streaks. Another problem is the slow speed. The MP navigator is quicker, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of dust and scratches, using the MP navigator. However, it is doing the job, and I am getting good results for the most part. Although I have used this product for less than a week, I have used it for 6-8 hours per day, so I feel qualified to write a review!
Pros: High resolution
Cons: Slow-speed scanning, odd glitches
