Great Value!

I am so happy I decided to purchase this scanner. Works great with my MacBook Pro. Fast & great quality scans at a variety of dpi's for the money. Suggestions for Mac users at end of this review.
I am using it to copy boxes of old family photos & slides into iPhoto. I had been using our all-in-one home devices (not Canon brand) and had become frustrated by mediocre quality, lack of flexibility and failure to recognize to scan just the photo area. This happened with 3 all-in-ones.
I wanted to stay in the same price range, but knew I needed to make a change. I also needed something that would work with slides as well as photos. After reading scanner reviews I purchased the CanoScan 8800F. Wow, among other things, what a bump up in quality of color.
I suggest you download the device driver from the Canon web site and if you want to scan directly into iPhoto do NOT download MP Navigator. Web site has the most up to date driver. Also, the Easy Install from the CD installs both the driver and MP Nav software. This prevented me from being able to choose iPhoto as my scan destination. I would then have to move files from MP Nav into iPhoto.
After uninstalling MP Nav I just put single or multiple photos on the scanner tray, pressed the "Photo/Film" button on the scanner, waited and poof..... up popped a screen on my laptop showing the recognized photos, asking at what dpi I wished to scan and letting me choose iPhoto as my scan destination. Only drawback was each picture showed as a separate event so I had to group photos manually by merging.
Pros: Compact Design, Fast Connectivity, High resolution, High-speed scanning, scans multiple photos at once
Cons: vague & inadequate quick start manual

This scanner is easily the best I've had. And the driver software is well-written - it even works in Windows 7 64 bit. The scanner is recognized by various photo software packs, so I don't feel tied down to any particular package to use the scanner. The scanner is fast, and gives high-quality scans. I scanned a 100-year-old photo and the results were spectacular. The preview function is great, so you only scan what you need to. Compared with my old HP scanner, this thing is a complete God-send (HP drivers/software are probably the worst I've seen, and compatible with nothing), and "just seems to work". I took a chance on Canon based on the EOS I already own, and was not disappointed - same Canon quality.
Pros: easy to use, High-speed scanning, Fast Connectivity, High resolution

Have scanned negatives, slides, photos & many misc documents. It's easy to use and produces very crisp computer files. I've seen some comments about these being slow, but once a person gets the sequence of process under way things move right along. This ones a class act.
Pros: durable, High resolution, easy to use

The CanonScan 8800F does everything I needed to do with old black and white negatives, color slides, and scanning photos into such programs as PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro. The scan modes are excellent for this work. I am very impressed with the quality for that price.
Pros: durable, easy to use, High resolution

Good scanner

I've had this scanner about 6 months now, and it has worked great. Scanning documents for electronic filing (black and white) is very fast, and the "Save to PDF" option allows me to keep my scanned documents in a convenient file format.
I've also scanned lots of color photos, and the speed is good and the scan quality great. I've also scanned about 500 slides, and the speed is good and the scan quality is excellent, far surpassing my expectations. I used the scans to make a DVD slide show, and even on a fairly large TV the images looked sharp and the colors vivid.
I have run into occasional issues where the Canon software does not "find" the correct edges of the slides I am scanning, but the software also allows you to adjust manually and hasn't been a big problem.
A couple of potential downsides - the scanner is quite large and the lid (which is very long) only stays open if you open it 90 degrees. Neither problem was a big issue for me.
Overall, I love the scanner and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
Pros: easy to use, High resolution
Cons: Large Footprint

I purchased this scanner to scan slides, negatives and photos. It has surpassed my expectations. It worked flawlessly in the 2000 things that I scanned with it. I would recommend this scanner to anyone who wants to preserve old slides and photos. It is so easy to use, even though it says that it is not compatible with Windows 7, it still worked just fine. I had no problem with clarity of the photos and the speed was acceptable. It takes about 4 minutes to scan 4 slides, but the wait is worth it. I even scanned some black and white negatives from the 30's and they came out great.
Pros: Compact Design, durable, Fast Connectivity, High-speed scanning, easy to use

A reliable "workhorse"!

This was an excellent purchase. Since September 09, I have used it to scan well over 200 pics and slides for use in a project. I am delighted with the outcome of some photographs which, in the original, were so dark that it was difficult to see any detail. Many of the slides I scanned are 45 to 50 years old, but they scanned as good quality photos. It is also simple to use for anyone not accustomed to using this type of product.
So glad I made the decision to purchase it.
Pros: Compact Design, Fast Connectivity, High resolution, easy to use, a good reconditioned product

Purchased this scanner to replace my Apple SCSI scanner. The scanner is easy to install and use. The PhotoStudio software is not unlike PhotoShop and does an excellent job. Before installing, be sure to go to the Canon website to check for and download any driver or software updates. This scanner works perfectly with our iMac and Mac OS X 10.5.5. Great machine!
Pros: durable, easy to use, High-speed scanning, Fast Connectivity, High resolution
