I purchased the MX700 almost 2 years ago. I wanted to be able scan, fax, and print documents and photos. It also had "straight through" paper path which is required for working with heavier papers such card stock and good photo paper. It was critical the whole family could share it via ethernet since Windows print sharing requires the "host" computer to be up and running. The ADF allowed me to use it as reliable fax machine. The latest BIOS update fixed the problem with it grabbing and holding the line. Based on the reviews online (e.g. PC Mag), it had the lowest ink cost per page and does seem to be reasonable in its consumption. I prefer the approach of replacing ink tanks rather than making cartridges with disposable ink jets. It allows the vendor to engineer in better quality in each head (2 picoliter was the smallest drop at the time) . In general, if you pay for the printer, the consumables will be less expensive (nothing is ever free).
I have also been pleased with its capacity for photos including being able scan 4 - 4 x 6 photos in single scan and then have the software break them each into individual photos. The scanning and faxing can also be done via network which a nice feature. The scanning software is not high end, but it does get the job done. You also can take items directly to PDF files which I use for historical records.
The only negatives are minor. It can ocaisionally jam although it has only required removing the jammed page and restarting the printer. It also will occaisionally go into a "think mode" where it seems to play with the first sheet of paper. My assumption is this is the printer aligning its heads and the piece of paper from the sheet feeder. It generally only occurs when it is the first printout of the hour and only on the first page regardless of the length of the document.
My family has used the printer to make invitations, photos, greeting cards, professional presentations, and print out large (>50) page reports. Overall, it has worked extremely well and I'm pleased with the printer. At this point, I would simply replace it with another similar Canon printer should it fail.

Wish I had found my MX700 sooner!!

My previous photo printer, that I had for 12 years, I thought was the best ever, until I bought my MX700. I didn't really want a multifunction machine, but in looking at many different products and reading tons of reviews, I decided that this machine was the top of the line and bought it. I fell in love the first day, when I hooked it up and installed the software. Probably the easiest hook up and install job that I have ever done.
Canon outdid themselves with this machine. Very user friendly, easy to follow instructions for each use, and the photos quality come out the best that I have seen. Very efficient use of ink. I can print 75+ full sheets of 8.5 X 11"photos before I have to think about replacing an ink tank. The ink tanks are not expensive, and compared to my last printer they are about one third the price. Price for ink cartridges and amount of use from them is one of the factors that helped me make the MX700 my choice. Very quiet when printing, and doesn't shake the computer table and desk.
I didn't think that I would use the other functions but little, if at all, but I found that I had a use for every function, and each easy to use. The stand alone ability of the MX700 makes it even more useful for me. Nice to have camera memory chip ports on the MX700.
I convinced my older sister and brother what a wonderful machine this, and they have each purchased one for themselves. They bought theirs a year after I purchased mine, so they got the benefits of a later version of the same machine.
I speak very highly to friends and acquaintances about my MX700, and recommend it to them. I explain to them the advantages of having a quality piece of equipment, over a low end machine.
Thanks Canon!!

Poor design, poor support

The MX700 does a good job of printing, faxing and copying. NO problems there. My real complaints have to do with its design, its operating expenses, and its lack of support.
The major design flaw is that all offsize paper (such as envelopes) must be loaded thru the feed slot in the back of the machine. To save space, my printer is on a shelf over my desk, five feet off the floor, against the wall. I cannot see how to load envelopes without crawling on my desk on my knees and trying to see over the top of the machine. So I never use it to print anything other than 8.5x11.
Next problem, the ink cartidges are tiny, so they must be rreplaced often, and very expensive.
Finally, I am trying for the first time to scan doucments into my computer, but Canon provides no support at all. The paper manual has one page on scanning photos, nothing on scanning documents. The application itself (the window that opens when you click on Canon Printer)is equally useless as it contains only printer options and information, nothing on scanning documents. I haven't found anything on their website either.
Pros: durable, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable
Cons: Large Footprint, Difficult to use, High Ink Consumption
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great except for...

This printer is really reliable and prints fast with excellent quality however when I had to install everything, It instructed me to connect the USB cable from the printer to the computer, and what do you know... NO USB cable comes with the setup. I had to drive back to the store again just to buy a stupid little cord that should have been in the box to begin with.
Pros: fast print speed, reliable
Cons: Difficult Setup

Worst printer I ever had
on May 1, 2009

Has good features, too bad they don't all work. I got it to be a network printer, but never was able to get it working on the network without disabling all the applications on my computer. Had to unplug the fax because it kept dropping into fax mode during phone calls (not a major deal to me). And now that I have had it a few months (just replaced the first ink tank) it has started jamming from the front paper tray. Happens multiple times a day.
Do not buy this printer, it looks like a good deal, but is really just a waste of money.
Pros: fast print speed, multiple ink tanks
Cons: unreliable, frequent paper jams, not all features work, high ink cost

Fax nightmare

I liked this machine when we first got it in July 2009, but then in August the fax problems started. The service people are well-mannered, knowledgeable and will stay with you until they solve the problem ask you to bring it to a shop. The next service call was in September and then in January, I had to take it to the shop. By the end of January we realized that we can only fax one sheet at a time; it cannot handle multiple sheet faxes. Luckily my wife faxes a weekly time sheet which is one sheet, but today I had a multi-page form to fax and after a lot of tries with different settings, it didn't work. Our year warranty is up. I must add-- luckily the scanner works very well, so I can scan documents in as PDFs and send them as email attachments, as long as the other party accepts the attachments. We did give canon a try. Wish we could get help but our warranty is up. I will try emailing tech support to see if there are some answers.

Disappointing

Was very excited about the features of this product, but instead I have a printer that continually gives me error messages and only occassionally prints. When it does print, it is sloppy, but mostly it doesn't print at all. I am very disappointed in this printer; despite only using it a few times, will probably have to start looking for another printer soon.
Cons: Difficult to use, unreliable, Dull Tones & Colors
