For the price, don't know if you can beat it as long as it has the features you're looking for. I constantly switch it between my Mac and a few PCs and never had a paper jam. I like that it only requires one black ink cartridge instead of the 2 used by the MP8300 and it has a smaller footprint. Great for home office. Fax works well, but I primarily use for printing b&w docs, scanning, and sometimes for printing photos. Performs all of these functions very well. Very reliable.

Happy as a pig in mud!

This is my sixth (6th) Canon inkjet, starting back with the old BJC 600, and it's by far, the best one yet! It's fast, quiet (unlike my BJC 3000), makes great copies, fax works fine and prints beautifully, including photos (although I don't do too many of those). The only problem I've encountered is setting the fax ring count because we have voice mail and if I set the ring count too low, the fax answers instead of voice mail; if it's set too high the voice mail comes on and the fax never comes through, and I have found no solution to this problem. Otherwise, I'm "happy as a pig in mud" with the machine.
Pros: reliable, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: only as noted in my review

Adequate

My biggest problem with the printer is the basic design. I bought it because it had a low profile and was one of the few that fit in my cabinet with a pull out slide. However, I discovered that envelopes and legal sized paper must be fed from the back. It is really inconvenient to pull the printer out at an angle to be able to load the paper. It prints well but after about a year of use, it is really using the color ink quickly even though I mainly print in black.
The fax feature also sometimes cuts off incoming phone calls which is a real nuisance. Thus I have to leave the fax turned off.

Great multi function device. Worked great for several months but suddenly broke with a "U051 Print head not installed. Install print head." error. Naturally the print head is installed.
Pros: Compact Design, portable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed
Cons: unreliable

Best Printer ever

I switched from a Pixma 4000 which I was happy with except it did not network well and the black ink sender burned out when it got dry.
This printer is totally awesome. I never thought I would use all the features, but I definitely do. I tossed my ancient Epson scanner after one try at the new Canon. The best part is the networking. It finds all 3 computers in our house and sends the scanned document or whatever you're doing to or from the machine while you're standing there--no back and forth. AND the little canon screen actually tells you what's going on, so if you're out of ink or paper or something's not connected, you don't have to guess or go to the master computer it's connected to. The only negative has been figuring out how to get beyond the scan or copy screen to make it happen--it gets you to the settings okay but doesn't tell you what button to finally push to produce the copy or scan. I finally figured out you have to push the "black" or "color" button. Now if the only thing that goes wrong so what!! Read the manual.
Pros: Compact Design, durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, screen is very helpful, networking is awesome feature, does everything!, saves space if you have a fax and scanner too
Cons: screen doesn't give you last step to make the copy, can't find ink at the local stores (small town)

Fax Liability and Support

Overall I like the printer. All the functions except the Fax are fast and easy to use. To Fax, the document must be scanned into a word processor or spread sheet first then it can be faxed via the print menu of the application.
I have tried to find if there is a driver that enables direct Fax, but the database says nothing about one and there is no available phone number to ask a human being if direct Fax is a possibility for the MX700.

Horrible network features, good printer
on April 14, 2010

I've had the MX700 for about 2 years now. I honestly loved this printer when I first got it and used it via USB. However, soon after I looked to take advantage of the so called network features, I've come to hate it. I'm an IT pro and over my 2 years ownership, I've installed and upgraded this printer to several different PC's, the latest Windows 7. Each time I spend about 2 hours before giving up on it and wishing I had never tried.
It should work like any other network printer does. Plug in the network cable, set the IP address, etc, on the printer, and install the driver to the PC. They are using proprietary software thats required for network use and it's absolutely horrible.
Buy it and love it if you're not interested in sharing this out to your other network pc's. Avoid it like the plague if you need network features.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Difficult to use, Difficult Setup
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
