Worked well for 2 years then lid failed

I was satisfied with this kettle while it lasted. It boiled water quickly. This was my first glass kettle and I preferred the glass body to the plastic bodies of my previous kettles.
However, the lid failed after only 2 years of use. One of the two plastic hinges sheared from the base causing the lid opening mechanism not to work and the lid to pop open after boiling. Similar failure modes are reported in many other reviews above. No spare parts are available. I hope this review will encourage Breville to improve the design since designing a reliable hinge ought not to be a difficult thing to do.

Bought this kettle 2 years ago and it has been great in that it boils water really fast. Problem I have is that the hinge mechanism on the lid is garbage. After a year the one side of the hinge broke, not surprised as the post that holds this lid is all plastic and only about 1/8" wide, there is no way this item can last given that the lid is opened multiple times every week. This is one kettle I will never buy again. Designed to fail. 1 star from me

18months and falling apart

We got this kettle as a gift 18 months ago. I've never been happy with the stained look on the bottom where the element heats, but aside from that it's worked okay until 18months down the track. It firstly wouldn't switch off, just kept boiling and boiling dangerously until you manually switched it off, then the lid fell apart, the seal came out and you can't put it back in. Piece of rubbish. We are chucking it out for a new kettle. You'd think it should last longer, sadly, it's not good quality.

Stuck lid, unfixable

We've had ours for about 4 years now. After the first year, the lid got stuck in the closed position, and it appears that there is nothing you can do to fix it without breaking something more. We're lucky in that we can pour our filtered water in through the spout, but you better be strong otherwise you pour. We have to fill it over the sink.
Even though we only use filtered water, you can see that the plate is oxidizing in the shape of the element. We were able to clean the rust once before the lid broke. We won't be replacing it with Breville.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Really good but don’t last

I’m a fan of this brand and I thought this will be as strong and reliable as my coffee machine, toaster, oven and coffe grinder. But it was really disappointing to see that after almost 2 year the handle gave up and now the lid does not close anymore. I really love this kettle but it’s dissapointing to see that didn’t last long and apparently there is no way to repair it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Flawless design and operation

I'm perplexed by the negative reviews listed below. We purchased this product almost 2 years ago and have had nothing but a great experience with it. We use it multiple times a day. It's a work-horse. No leaking. Lid operates beautifully and everything is well-built and durable. Beautiful design, great-tasting, safe hot water every time.

Love the sleek and stylish look to this electric kettle. Also enjoy how convenient it is to boil water for tea, coffee, or anything needed hot water fast. Only one drawback is that the top soft open top sometimes malfunctions. Other than that, love it!!!
