Love this ice cream maker for the working mom
on November 20, 2019

I love to experiment with cooking and food all together to provide more homemade food for my kids. However as a working mom times and opportunities for specialty technique like ice cream or gelato take time of an opportunity that does not always stay open. In traditional ice core makers you can not make the ice cream unless the bowl has been cooled in the freezer which can be an over night thing. In my life, i need to fully utilize the open time in one chunk as i may not have it the following the day. The Breville ice cream maker was a splurge that i love because i can make the mixture that day and put it in the maker about 30 min after and push a button and leave it there to do its thing. The maker is easy to use with the dials from anything to sorbet to gelato. I have made a few recipes from the book and from the internet and found no issues in receipt conversion to the maker. I have mainly used teh gelato function and the ice cream comes out rich and soft for gelato. Its not the consistency of professionally made gelato but still has a great texture that i love beyond normal ice cream. Also, the texture depends on how you cuook it and what in gradients you use which ih ave not mastered myself. Depending not eh temperature of your ice cream the Breville can take a while to make it but once it pour the mixture in you leave it. I have used the precooled function to get things going faster. The ring tone for add in is convenient as well as the maker can take more then an hour to churn the ice cream/gelato sometimes. However, in the ends it come out working great and if you are stuck doing another chore in the house ice cream maker has a cooling function to keep the ice cream cool for about 2 hours after it has been made. The icecream maker does take up continuer space and is huge. I have set in a corner that i do not use much for cooking but it is a counter space hog. Make sure t place for that. Its not really convenient to take in and out of a pantry or cabinet for use as its bulky and you would not want to break it. I like it and use it weekly to 2 a month and it all dependent on time. It also can loud to have on consistently but you learn to ignore it and move on to the other things. The attachment are pretty durable but i have has one issue with the flip toppled for ad in. it has fallen off the hinges. However, i found the prices of replacement parts to be in expensive on teh website. Other then teh lid teh rest of the attachment and cleaning suppliers work well. Overall, i love this product and am happy with the machine as it was my own gift to myself.
This Breville unit was more expensive than other ice cream makers but it is very easy to use (turn the dial on the control panel to the desert that you are making, pour in the mix and press the Start button) and makes great ice cream. We appreciate the built in compressor that eliminates the need to pre-cool the ice cream mix and can keep the finished ice cream cold for a couple hours. We are looking forward to great ice cream for many years.

Broke after third use

Super disappointed that after using this machine only 3 times the button that controls the hardness setting for the ice cream stopped working and I cannot use it anymore unless I want a very soft consistency; which I don't! Huge investment and don't know what to do with the machine now. Was great before this happened.

the different texture settings (sorbet, gelato, ice cream) don‘t work properly.

and when you fill in the liquid and spill a little bit, the bucket is stuck to the machine and it‘s impossible to take it out. and ideally, the machine should be able to hold the temp after programme is done.

Not what I expected...

I bought this almost two years ago and I am surprised it is still being sold. The machine has limitations about how frozen/creamy your ice cream can get. Recipes made with heavy cream never get to store-bought consistency because the churner is not strong enough to keep moving once the mixtures becomes a little thick, so it stops churning. Also the container ends up being too small for a family of four since you need to leave space in the bowl due to the churning blade pushing ice cream out to borders. There is also a loud squeaky noise coming constantly either from plastic lid or blade a few minutes into the process or when the mixture starts getting certain level of thickness. In summary, I just feel I spent too much money for that type of performance. Now I want to sell it but no one would buy it...

Great ice cream maker, but wearing out?

I bought my Breville Smart Scoop about 4 years ago and use it intermittently with great results. I have probably made 30 batches. The last time I used it, it took much longer to freeze and the temperature generated was a few degrees warmer than usual. I am concerned that the compressor or some other component is wearing out. Any recommendations on where I can get it serviced? I live in San Jose, CA, USA. Thanks!
