Looks good - poor quality

Just after the one year mark (and the warranty expired) this microwave started acting up. It won't shut off after it has completed the timed cook cycle and keeps going if you close the door again. It needs to be unplugged from the wall every time. Just this week it has started to quit part way through a cook cycle. I've had this product less than 2 years and won't be buying another one.
Don't let your kitchen designer talk you into getting one just because it looks good in the kitchen!

Have had lots of microwaves--this is the best. The express feature is great- fast and easy! Doesnt get any better. I usually buy GE appliances---can't beat their reliability. I've never had a problem with anything made by GE. I wish I cld same the same about some of the others like Japanese or Korean made.
I would recommend this to a friend!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this product because it fit perfectly in the space as a pseudo-built-in. But we had problems right from the start. It would turn on by itself when the door was open. The repairman came out and fixed this door problem, but now, after less than 4 months of use, the lower right front panel has come unglued and the touchpad has bubbled up on the most frequently used areas (on and off...) But I do have to say the repair service was very prompt when we had the door problem.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Very poorly constructed

This is my third GE Spacemaker II. The first lasted 90 days, then stopped working. My cabinets were custom built around the size of this unit, so I replaced the unit with an identical model. On June 19th, 2012, the microwave generator, now, past warranty, literally, blew up. Again, because of the size of the Spacemaker II, I replaced it with another unit. The door mechanism barely works. You cannot open the unit merely by pressing on the door release. You must reach under the door and lift up while pressing. Frankly, I'm searching for another brand, of similar size, to replace this over priced, under built microwave oven. I've spoken with the retailer who admits that the door issue is very common and they've returned multiple units to GE. This is clearly a Do Not Buy!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] VERY USEFUL , SHARP DESIGN, HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH 2008 MODEL, HOPE ALL IS FIXED. JUST ENOUGHT FEATURES FOR KITCHEN WORK. WOULDN'T DO WITHOUT, EVERYONE NEEDS A MICOWAVE AND THIS ONE HAS THE FUTURE DESIGN FEATURES WE ALL WANT .

I bought the 2008 model. After the warranty was up I have had nothing but problems. Often when the door is closed and the 'start' is operated the microwave does not start. I have to clean the contacts before it will start. Then sometimes when I have heated something and removed it then closed the door, it starts all by itself. Now all the paint on the top inside is peeling off. This toxic paint dropped into food. Now I have to replace it but I fear it may be the only microwave that will fit in my custom cabinetry. I would DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND this product. The workmanship is very cheap and shoddy.

Paint peels

Within a few months of buying this microwave, the door latch started sticking. It was still within warranty so someone came out to fix it. After a year, it started sticking again.
Worse than that, about one month after the warranty ended, the paint began to peel off the top of the inside of the microwave. It continues to peel off in sheets all the time. I'm still using it, but I only warm things up in covered containers.
I am very disappointed in this. I have had many microwaves over the years, and the paint never failed. I think GE should issue a recall on this since there clearly seems to be some issue with paint adherence.
